I use Logo therapy, Gestalt therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
The work you do with me should heal on two levels: The first is the deeper level where we form a relationship with ourselves and the second is where we form relationships with others, so you can be more comfortable and clear in your daily life. I have extensive experience in both mental health and substance use issues and treated adults and adolescents. I have been supervised and trained in both pre and post-graduate settings in individual, group, family, and couples counseling therapy. I have experience working with a wide range of psychological issues including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use.

My clients are often younger adults (20's-40's) and include anyone with some desire to grow their understanding of their true selves, the purpose of and vision for their life, and how in daily/weekly practice to live a coherent and happier life (relationships, career, family...) towards these. While their longing & readiness for these is strongest, we work more intensively for some months (not years) before a break. My couples, also often 20's-40's, tend to hire me when they feel these longings together & often in phases of growth induced by stress/strain, opportunity (or both) in the relationship, like having a child or moving.

I believe that the most healing, transformative therapeutic work occurs when there is an authentic relationship between therapist and client. I provide an environment which fundamentally supports a feeling of safety by witnessing you where you are with curiosity and without judgment. For many people, feeling safe also involves being able to set their own pace in therapy.

I like to start by building trust and finding out what goals you want to set for yourself. A safe, encouraging atmosphere with no authoritarian or shaming attitudes is important. Humor is useful with couples, families or teens. Role-plays are a fun way to practice new relationship skills.

I've seen the power of human connection and how it can be a catalyst for great change in our lives. When people take the courageous step to seek therapy, they know they want to change something, but they may not know what the thing is, or how to go about changing it. I meet my clients where they are with authenticity, and am adept at shining a light on their competence, capacity for growth, and value they bring to the world.

I have been practicing psychotherapy for almost 40 years. I believe therapy to be an art form, inasmuch as each person, couple or family has their own singular story, and their own needs; My job is to employ the best approach for that individual or family. I utilize metaphor and humor as tools to help re-frame a perspective or shed light on a troublesome concept, often helping clients look at a particular difficulty in a new way. Please call for a free consult.

I've developed techniques based on my personality that help people change for the better as quickly, efficiently, and painlessly as possible. My ways of helping clients require me to understand how they think, compare it to the reality I see, and discuss the differences. After practicing as a clinical psychologist in rural Vermont for 36 years, I'm now a Solution-Focused Life Coach offering short term interventions to help solve minor or major feeling-related problems. I don't take notes. I don't bill insurance. To me confidentiality is a high priority.

I see individuals, couples, and families. My goal is to provide clients a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship to talk, feel, heal, and change. Life challenges present us with opportunities for new chapters, new growth. Helping you reach your therapy goals is of utmost importance to me. You do not need to be controlled by the past, yet do you often use old behaviors in situations wanting a new response? Are you suffering from depression, anxieties, relationship problems, fears, self-doubts, or "irrational" worries? Together we will explore ways to help you live with more awareness, more freely, and with more energy for your present.

Gestalt Therapists

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
