I invite children, adolescents and adults who are struggling to utilize a variety of art materials and play to creatively find their own path to well-being. By expressing and exploring their feelings and concerns, I support my clients to give color and form to their inner voice and to befriend and encourage their own potential. My clients can work with or without prior art knowledge to overcome anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, social concerns, grief and life transitions. Through the power of creative engagement, I'll support you to find yourself and make the changes needed to feel better.
My journey as a Clinical Social Worker has encompassed 30+ years of practice. I have had the privilege to work with children and families as well as with adults in a variety of different settings. I have a strong background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and expertise working with trauma survivors and with those who have experienced vicarious traumatization. My approach can best be described as integrative and holistic. This means that I rely upon various psycho-therapeutic methods and evidence-based models that are combined to create a personalized approach to our work together.
Note: I am currently not taking new clients. As a former high school math teacher, I love working with adolescents. I appreciate their energy, their ideas and the struggles they go through to find an identity and define themselves. I enjoy working with couples, whether working to enhance their relationship, struggling to keep their relationship intact or deciding to end the relationship. When couples do decide to divorce, I work with them to end it respectfully and with good communication. Finally, I like seeing anyone who is struggling with the stress, anxiety and/or the discouragement of daily living at any stage of life.
I have worked as a personal counselor since 1986 and as a licensed clinical social worker since 2004. I am a solution-focused therapist who listens deeply to my clients, then engages each in a true two-way conversation. Whether I'm seeing adults, older adolescents, or couples, I treat my clients respectfully. We focus on the issue at hand, work to understand the history and causes behind it, then together implement steps to bring change quickly. I don't draw out therapy. Most of my clients see me for six to eight weekly sessions, moving to less and less frequent sessions as their confidence and life satisfaction increase.
In 20 years of witnessing adults/children within the therapeutic relationship, I am in awe of the strength and resiliency individuals show in the face of truly traumatic events. Over the years, I have built a level of expertise in understanding the role that the transpersonal plays in the healing process. Being a Registered Play Therapist means that I have examined clinically how the story we tell ourselves about an event dictates both the burdens & the strengths we assign to our "self." I welcome you to that process of discovery and healing as we partner on the human journey together.
I believe that life is a process of becoming. Who we are today is not who we were yesterday nor who we will be tomorrow. Sometimes on our journey we feel unsure of ourselves or our destination which is where the counseling process can be helpful. Through our work together, we can explore who you are and what you want, as well as identify and change the mental roadblocks that are interfering with your happiness and success. With patience and insight, you will begin to feel more wholly connected to yourself which will bring you peace and lasting change.
Life’s many challenges can leave us feeling powerless, out of control, and stuck in unhealthy patterns. Our wellbeing is also affected by social and cultural factors beyond our control, such as restrictive gender roles, rigid social norms, and systemic oppression. Therapy can help you gain insight on both the internal patterns and the external pressures affecting your mental health, and it can open you up to different ways of thinking, behaving, and responding to the world.
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has had over 12 years of experience working with children, youth, transition age youth and adults. I provide individual, family and couples therapy for adults. I incorporate alternative methods of therapy including: yoga, mindfulness, exercise, music, arts and crafts for youth who prefer a more interactive style of treatment. I believe the trusting relationship between therapist and client is one of the most powerful tools of treatment. I provide a humanistic and strength based approach to my work to build confidence to work towards goals.
