and adults in individual therapy, as well as family and couples therapy.
Change is inevitable but the process of change can be difficult to navigate alone, whether as an individual or a couple. Often advice from friends or extended family only goes so far, and is not really the kind of help you are looking for when what used to feel comfortable or right no longer feels so good. If you, your partner, or a family member identifies as male you may want to consider a male therapist to gain greater insight and understanding into male issues relating to emotions and communication and to provide greater support for both you and your family.

As CT licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my approach is broadly humanistic, client-centered, systems oriented and trauma informed.
Does this sound familiar?: You've lost touch with the hopes and dreams that used to motivate and inspire you. An important relationship is in trouble: your relationship with your spouse, partner, child, or family is a repeated source of pain. You received feedback that you don’t seem yourself lately or that your behavior is alarming to those who care about you. The responsiveness of a therapist can help us acknowledge the deep urging and longings of our truer selves. Therapy can be a place where we chart a new course for our lives. “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have a deep-rooted commitment to helping individuals from diverse backgrounds, backed by professional expertise in a variety of settings. But I also believe that clients are the experts on their own lives. I have worked with clients of all ages, from as young as three to late adulthood, in outpatient therapy settings; methadone clinics; intensive outpatient programs; inpatient psychiatric units, and in-home crisis intervention. One thing remains constant: the focus of therapy should be based on what YOU wish to work on.

If you have been considering therapy but think it’s not for you, you are not alone. The therapeutic process can feel scary or oppressive, or we are taught that it is “not what we do in our family.” Maybe you need someone who has spent more than 12 years professionally working with adolescents and families of all ages, as a teacher and therapist. If you have an adolescent who is going through something you can’t seem to understand, I am here to connect with them and help them figure it out.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with families, couples and individuals. Additionally, I ran a certified organic farm over the past 23 years. Although farming is not therapy, it is indeed therapeutic. Farming, like therapy, is about positive growth. Working with people who are interested in making positive change is a passion for me. Anyone who is willing to look into personal transformation in their everyday life has my utmost respect. A decision of this nature can be challenging and even sometimes scary. But, your motivation will work well for you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
