I am a clinical social worker who has been in private practice for over 30 years. I offer psychotherapy services for individuals, couples and families. My clients range from teenagers to retirees. I believe the strength of my work revolves around my ability to establish a safe, genuine therapeutic relationship that allows people to address whatever challenges they may be facing. Respect, kindness, a touch of humor, privacy and connection are the foundations of healing and change. I tailor my approach to address your individual needs.

I have been in private practice for over 30 years and believe that people can truly change their lives. People can take very difficult experiences in their lives and use them to develop a more meaningful life. I draw from my own experiences while I work with my clients and believe that change can happen at any age. People can use grief, loss, trauma and life's most difficult experiences to develop meaning that they may never have had. Finding your own spirituality and your own style of coping is what makes it unique.

The struggle can be figuring out how to make that change happen. Faulty and/or destructive thoughts and beliefs can impact our ability to be successful in bringing about this change. My expertise lies not just in helping you to identify and take the steps necessary to make this change but with compassion, a nonjudgmental attitude, warm sense of humor and collaborative approach, I help to create hope that over time it can.

Throughout childhood, children express themselves much better through play than by talking. The process of play therapy creates an environment where children do not have to talk directly about their sadness, anxieties, worries, or problems. Instead, children express themselves symbolically through their play; they communicate their conscious and unconscious feelings and experiences and in doing so, see that difficult feelings and memories become less intense and that they are able to work through and find solutions to their problems.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons. You may be feeling stuck in attempts to navigate difficult life transitions, seeking a vehicle for personal growth, or have a relationship challenge that you would like to address. Regardless of what brought you here, my role as a therapist is to help you (and/or you/your partner/family) identify the issues and patterns that are creating unhappiness or inhibiting your ability to create the life and relationships you desire. I will help you find alternative ways to address the concerns that led you to seek therapy.

I believe that every person has the right to live a happy, healthy and purposeful life. There are times when challenges get in the way of this. Happiness is not a straight trajectory, there are twists and turns and sometimes barriers that get in the way. I feel my purpose is to walk and support my client on their path of self discovery and assist them in acquiring skills that leads to life long changes. Self discovery and self empowerment is the key to change. I hold a safe, compassionate and non-judgmental space for my clients to explore themselves. Healing is like peeling an onion with many layers. We are complex.

For 40 years I have worked with both private practice clients and school systems who are seeking practical remedies for a wide variety of individual, marital, parenting and extended family problems. I specialize in mood disorders and anxiety. I've published five books--Undoing Depression is probably the most familiar---on depression, stress, and happiness, My latest, "Rewire," was released August 2014. My approach is basically psychodynamic, with a lot of CBT and mindfulness. I believe that anyone can change--the brain can literally be rewired--but it takes a lot of patience and practice. Most of the people I meet have been battered around by life, and it's left scars--difficulty hoping, difficulty trusting. It's my job to mobilize that hope and trust.

I hold a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice in clinical social work. I have practiced as a member of the psychiatry team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as a psychotherapist; I have also practiced at drug and alcohol treatment centers, adolescent treatment centers, and acute residential treatment settings. I have found increased success treating teens, adults, and families.

Post COVID, most of us are feeling deeply distressed, highly anxious and/or have slipped into depression. We have lost jobs, lost identities, have seen our relationships fracture and also have seen our social support systems slip away into the online world. LOSS is felt on so many levels today and what we are feeling now has been building up over the past few years!

I believe in making positive life changes for emotional well being. My experience includes work with adults in individual counseling, group therapy, and hospital based intensive outpatient programs. Some treatment approaches I utilize include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, brief treatments, and an eclectic approach to meet the needs of individual clients. I have worked in settings including counseling centers, assisted living facilities and hospitals. Commonly experienced issues I have assisted clients in working through include behavioral issues, impulsivity, family conflict, loss, relationship issues, self esteem and self worth issues, and effectively managing mood disorders and personality disorders.

My clinical focus is identifying and intervening on patterns of behavior and thought that prevent individuals from being more satisfied or better adjusted to where they are in their life. We all go through stress, transitions, and hardships. Adversity is a guarantee. What matters is how we deal with the challenges we encounter. Besides having a strong background doing individual work, I also work well with couples in conflict. There is something satisfying about helping a couple work through issues that have been eroding away the happiness and satisfaction that brought them together in the first place.
