I have particular expertise addressing LGBT topics, men's issues, topics of identity and oppression, as well as supporting clients with relationship and interpersonal style concerns.
My PhD training as a counseling psychologist affords me flexibility to support multiple life concerns, and at the root of my work is the belief that relationships are capable of healing. I build strong alliances with those whom I serve in order to best meet client directed goals and foster sustained change. I adhere to evidence-based practices in psychology, and research evidence strongly supports the importance of building a strong therapeutic alliance. Everyone has a unique lens through which they see the world and I strive to see the world as my clients do to provide the best care.

This includes resolving conflicts between spirituality & sexuality, being gay in an LDS community, disclosing infidelity, sex and porn addiction, and discretion in therapy.
Over the years, I have developed my gift of diagnosis which helps me to understand my patients in an accurate and easy to understand manner for them. Then we grieve together the past and implement interventions and boundaries for a healthy future. Psychotherapy is proven to be more enduring than drug therapy, and my approach towards treating my patients is to avoid medication where possible.

I am LGBTQ+ friendly and commonly work with clients experiencing faith crisis or transition, anxiety, depression, relationship or marriage dissatisfaction, and addiction.
I have experience working with young children, pre-teens, teens, young adults, couples, parents, and adults. Each phase of life has its own nuances, and I love to walk alongside my clients as they navigate the difficult and unexpected circumstances that can occur. As a parent myself, I am particularly passionate about empowering parents, addressing child-parent attachment, and treating child behavioral concerns. I have also been trained in EMDR and have experience working with both complex trauma and single incident traumas.

I particularly enjoy helping folks work through trauma and grief, addiction/substance abuse, LGBTQ+ issues, sexual and gender identity, depression, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, faith, and life in general.
I'm a firm believer that mental health care is for everyone, no matter what obstacles you're facing. It's my goal to normalize mental health care for all people. Just as you see a doctor multiple times per year, whether you're ill or not, proactive health care is crucial for a healthy, balanced life; the same goes for your mental health. My ideal client is any human being interested in navigating the rivers of their life, no matter the challenge(s) you're facing. My goal is to help you identify and explore your entire and true self. Together, we'll explore your past/present/future to navigate any/all issues and set realistic goals.

Please take note of the following important information: Hello There! To receive therapy services from me as your mental health provider, it is required to have a Primary Care Physician at Foothill Family Clinics. As follows, I operate differently than traditional therapy. I operate using the CoCM" which commonly stands for "Collaborative Care Model." Monthly sessions. It is a care approach particularly used in mental health settings to integrate behavioral health care into primary care.

To grow and heal, you have to be face the parts of yourself that you don’t show the world, however—you do not need to do that alone. I provide a non-judgmental space for self-honesty and discovering parts of yourself that got left behind. Reclaiming your wellbeing is about being seen and understood, honestly connecting with yourself and your instincts, recognizing and meeting your unmet needs, and coming back into alignment with who you really are.

I have over twenty years experience working with adolescents. My primary expertise is working with teens, parents and family dynamics but I love working with anyone who is seeking to empower and better themselves. I have experience working with almost every problem and issue but I have found that what truly makes a difference is when people learn to be the most powerful element of change in their own lives. People get better when they become empowered and learn to help themselves. That's when they start to look beyond their own limits. I love seeing people make this step, those are the ones I love working with the most.

I feel very strongly that there are really no unsolvable problems. Even when our only choice is to change our perspective, we can change the way we interact with problems to make them solvable. As a therapist, I am passionate about optimizing on existing strengths and finding creative ways to unlock more. I believe that when a person is able to truly feel that they are worth the effort it takes to make positive change, change is possible no matter how difficult.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
