Everyone is subject to facing challenges in life, some more difficult than others. It's common to need extra support during these times, it can often bring us comfort, reassurance and clarity. Remembering that we are strong, resilient and that we hold our own solutions can be empowering and provide confidence. When faced with mental health related symptoms, addictions issues or family addiction issues, it's easy to become overwhelmed and forget what we need to do to take care of ourselves. Seeking therapy is a brave and decisive way to provide self care. We are often more kind to others than we are to ourselves, prioritize you.

Congratulations for reaching out for support and taking the first step towards the life that you want to create. The world that we live in can be challenging, and sometimes we need help beyond our families and social circles. I use a strengths-based approach to work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, and eating disordered behaviors. I believe in the use of mindfulness practices to strengthen the mind-body connection and believe that self care is the basis for being able to support ourselves and ultimately being able to share our lives with others.

I believe in the uniqueness of each human being and that all people have inherent strengths. I know when a person seeks counseling it is because he/she is feeling overwhelmed or stuck. In the safety of a professional helping relationship you will address those areas as well as recognize and utilize your own strengths so you can move forward to resolve your problems. I work with people on a variety of difficult life issues and I meet each person where they are at. In addition to helping individual adults, I work with parents, families and children ages 7-18.

I’m Katherine Vilnrotter. I believe that every person is important and has a voice to be heard. The stories we align ourselves with, determine our perceptions of ourselves, our situations, and others. The richer the story, the more useful tools it has to offer us on our journey. The beauty of a story is its fluidity; it is always changing, evolving, and transforming along with the characters it holds. I’m honored to witness every story and enrich it with new tools and perspectives along the way. If you'd like to get to know me a bit better, you can listen to my podcast at... https://doc.simplecast.com/episodes/youre-not-broken

The anxiety, depression, and identity issues that can arise from trauma and other personal issues can confuse and defeat our best intentions for ourselves - especially when the trauma was experienced early in life, interrupting the developmental cycle. I am here for those who find they struggle to create change in their lives due to early trauma or who struggle to overcome the outmoded and worn stories that do not serve the person they would like to be. In working together you will discover and apply coping skills for everyday triggers, broaden self-regulation, and develop self-awareness.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with thirteen years of clinical experience. Passionate about providing individualized and intentional care, I believe that therapeutic work requires a strong connection, where clients feel heard and empowered. Taking a psychotherapeutic approach, I help clients to develop awareness of how we come to understand ourselves and the way we interact with the world. Through this journey, we develop compassion for the patterns we created to adapt to our environment, while exploring what may keep us from experiencing life with more connection and acceptance, and less shame and judgment.

Welcome! The decision to look at therapy as a method of self work is a big one. You may be excited to start or continue your journey, or you may be experiencing some conflicting feelings. Starting where you are is a good way to engage in self work, and working with a therapist can help you find support, education, and encouragement around your goals.

As a counselor, I bring unconditional positive regard, a belief in individual strengths, and an unwavering commitment to you. I am genuine, empathic, intuitive, and passionate about helping you. I use person centered therapy first and foremost; meaning that I'm always looking for the good in you, believing in you and supporting you to make your life feel it's most fulfilled. For each person that's different - for some it's "happiness", for some it's being present or mindful, and for some it's managing symptoms so other things can be balanced in their life. From this support, I hope to create a space where you can pursue your needs.

I am currently at capacity and not accepting new clients. Are you finding that your life isn't what you envisioned? Are you feeling depleted, anxious, stuck, parenting a challenging child, or wondering who you are? Are you looking for a safe, nurturing environment with a highly skilled practitioner? Especially an authentic person who believes that the process can and should include laughter? Clients are often pleasantly surprised with the wide array of tools and experience I draw on, including guided meditations created based on your preferred images and desired length. I then emailed to you, to access at any time.

I focus on creating a safe and collaborative relationship. I base my work in the belief that we are affected by relationships- how we relate to others, our world, and our self. When we feel a safe connection in these areas, there seems to be more peace in the present. We may tend to feel more resilient when facing stress and change. When we feel disconnected, parts of us can feel stuck in anger, fear, criticism, or sadness. Our emotional well-being and relationships may become distressed. Therapy can be a way to navigate painful emotions, connect more deeply, and awaken qualities of confidence, creativity, and compassion.

When marriages fail, it is not increasing conflict that is the cause. It is decreasing affection and emotional responsiveness."- Sue Johnson, author of "Hold Me Tight." I help couples create emotional safety, heal past hurts, and learn to take emotional risks. Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is a revolutionary approach to relationship therapy because it's not just about teaching couples to communicate differently, but instead about guiding them towards a new experience of themselves and each other. Relationships change and grow when we experience our partner in a new way and we learn to be responsive. I can help.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Maine?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
