My practice is unusual in that I recognize that the dominant social paradigm in the United States expects a person to be 'well adjusted', even in the face of cultural, social, and political forces that tend to militate against wellness. I work well with adults and adolescents whose experience is that they just don't seem to fit the mold. I recognize the value in every person, and believe that freedom and contentment are available to all who seek them. Being human is hard, and the path through adversity, pain, and even suffering CAN be found and navigated.

Betsy Kehoe Elder
Counselor, LCPC
Focused on healing through trauma-informed, body-based care and grounded in family systems theory, I draw on a range of counseling approaches including; psychodynamic, transpersonal, existential, expressive, mindfulness, mind-body, behavioral (DBT and CBT). Together we sojourn toward self-awareness and compassion for self. Emblematic moments from the past may have become conditioned responses to the present. We focus both on here and now and historical events. TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), mindfulness, sensorimotor psychotherapy and EMDR-Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing help re-program stored arousal in the body.

Emotions are our rudder leading us through the seas of life, both stormy and calm. They are not something to be afraid of, ashamed of, or to run away from. When connected with and channeled in a healthy way, emotions are adaptive and effective guides for transformation and healing. We can sink or we can use the healing power of emotions to authentically navigate through our life journey. Whether this is your first time in therapy or you have past experience, whether you're looking for yourself or for couple's support - your needs, pain and joys deserve to be heard in an empathic, accepting and safe setting.

Unfortunately, at this time I am not taking on new clients. I work with people who have trouble with relationships, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, rage fits, struggle with addiction/alcohol, have gone through trauma, and grew up in unhealthy homes. People who at times wish they could escape life and need support to remember how to smile, or sometimes learn how to smile (for real) for the first time. If someone uses legal and/or illegal substances and wants to quit or not, I support your decision. If you want to ease your anxiety, anger, and/or sadness and want to feel happy, I believe you deserve that! :)
