You help others to create better lives for themselves, but what about you — where do you turn when you need support while caring for others? You may experience compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary trauma in helping professions, and the only way you can continue to show up for your patients is to make space to heal for yourself. You are probably a Type-A personality who puts everyone else's needs above your own. I'm here to tell you it's okay to take time for yourself. I'm here to provide a space to heal from old trauma wounds and workplace stressors that have created difficulty in work/life balance.

I offer counseling for adults and couples. With over 36 years of clinical experience, I'm also a parenting specialist, helping parents understand their children's behavior. As a divorce mediator, my approach is child-centered. Ongoing parental conflict increases psychological damage to children, thus by strengthening the co-parenting relationship, the parties can focus on their children's needs. If you're struggling with relational challenges, childhood trauma, divorce, & ready to make positive changes, we can work together to identify generational patterns holding you back. Telehealth only.

It is rarely easy to find a way out of whatever it is that is compromising our ability to be fully present in our own life. We might describe this powerful emotion as anxiety, or depression, a difficult mood we are in more often than not. We may also think of this feeling or mind state as an obstacle we must overcome before we can fully engage with other aspects of our life such as relationships, professional ambitions, creative projects. Perhaps we have a story of ourselves that remains untold, or partially told. A story which is a source of despair because of its untapped potential.

"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." Life is often characterized by events, challenges and emotions beyond our control. It can seem overwhelming to even think about swimming after being hit with wave after wave. These billows come in the form of anxiety, depression, family conflict or tragedy, relationship difficulties and traumas of varying intensity. Taking a fresh gulp of air to get afloat is the first step to finding strength and building the skills necessary to ride the waves.

Currently, I have availability for two clients. I am a state-licensed, nationally board-certified professional counselor with 32 years of experience. As a psychotherapist, my focus is holistic; treating the whole person and focusing on clients' gifts and skills, not just the so-called presenting problem. I believe all of us have answers within and need an objective, caring professional to help us discern what those answers are.

Currently, my primary work is with Individual Adults, in Kennebunk, Maine and Telehealth in Maine, Massachusetts and Florida. We all want to be happy. And many of us are happy much of the time as ordinary events pass through us without leaving a mark. And then, something happens and we're stuck. These events narrow our view of ourselves, our world and keep us from living to our full potential. Your problems affect who you are today and you want things to change. I can help you reduce what keeps you stuck so that you can move forward living your life in a more fulfilling and meaningful way.

I appreciate you taking the time to learn about me and to consider working together. I have over 30 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, families and couples. I use an eclectic approach, guided by psychodynamic principles to help those I care for. I work best with individuals and couples who wish to have greater insight into the life of the mind; with a desire to reach optimal goals, and overcome obstacles to living a higher quality life. As a psychologist, I have specialty training in psychological evaluation, which can more quickly help to identify unknowns and underlying issues we can discuss in therapy.

Are you living the life that you want to live? Maybe everything is going okay, but it still just feels like something is missing. There’s a difference between surviving and thriving. You don’t need to settle for mediocrity and monotomy. It’s time to put yourself first. It’s time to make a change. You can learn how to be the best version of yourself and live a life with no regrets. “Band-aids don’t fix bullet holes”. Healing can’t be rushed. You deserve better. I want you to enjoy sustained improvement and that might not be a quick fix.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
