With over ten years of experience I specialize in working with individuals who have anxiety, depression, substance use, co-dependency, relationship issues, trauma and stress management.
Congratulations on taking the first step toward health and healing. There comes a time in life when our old ways of thinking and behaving are no longer serving us, which can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Therapy can be a great way to explore solutions and learn to manage your symptoms.

I have expertise in treating substance abuse and addiction and its impact on both individuals and families.
If you’re lost, disconnected, pondering big questions, or trying to recover from these “unprecedented times,” you’re in good company. Together, we can create the change you seek. I offer a nonjudgmental, supportive space to face doubt and fear, say the unsayable, and do the uncomfortable (but fulfilling) work of growing emotionally and spiritually. We will collaborate to increase self awareness, clarify goals, redirect unhealthy patterns, and discover new possibilities and perspectives. I’m a former health journalist who listens with curiosity, asks key questions, and helps you find the authentic story you're meant to live.

While in full-time private practice as a Psychotherapist & Addictions Specialist for 24 years I engage in direct care to help individuals and families work through trauma and obstacles.
We all need help sometimes. You might be a mother struggling with postpartum depression, juggling the stress of kids and work, or coming to grips with an empty nest. You might be a student dealing with the pressures of high school or college, facing the demands of maintaining your grades and social life at the same time. Or maybe you’re someone battling the damage of addiction, staring at the loss of your friends, your job and even your own identity. Whatever the story, life can challenge us all.

Are you feeling overwhelmed and anxious? At times life can deal us a difficult hand, and these events can change the way we see ourselves and the world. We can be left feeling lost and angry, and we might struggle with depression and anxiety that feels completely out of control. These events can cause us to feel isolated and alone, and it can be difficult to ask for help. The process of therapy can create a safe space for you to reconnect and heal. Together we can create your path toward healing and empowerment. As a licensed therapist, I have experience with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction.

LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE! A phrase we often hear but seldom get to experience fully. And why? Because oftentimes people are going through life SURVIVING instead of truly LIVING. We make choices out of fear instead of love. When we are in SURVIVAL mode, we think only to stabilize ourselves in the moment. We may feel anxious, depressed, angry, or burnout. We may struggle with isolation, substance misuse, relationships, or risky behavior. In LIVING mode we are able to regulate our emotions appropriately, communicate effectively with others, maintain boundaries, practice self care, feel safe in our own body and THRIVE.

You are aware that you need to change, but are fearful of the consequences. Your thoughts and feelings create behaviors that are unproductive and painful. I have been in practice since 1987, working with individuals who are willing to learn healthier, more productive coping skills. Individuals, couples and families struggling with addiction, trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depression have successfully worked toward positive goals and outcomes when willing to prioritize and allow our innate resilience to lead the way. Active/Retired first responders, military, adolescents and adults, LGBTQ, disabled, all welcome.

I specialized in treating a variety of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, etc.
Do you sometimes feel that life is harder than it should be? Almost as if everyone else received a manual on happiness and you didn't? Well, You're not the only one. Often we reach a point in our lives where we question ourselves and what we do. There are other times when we feel things like anger, sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and don't really understand why or where these feelings are coming from. It is not easy to talk about these feelings with other people, even those that are close to us. But, what would it be like for you to find someone that will not only listen to you, but also help you manage those feelings?

Five year training in psychodrama with addiction at the Caron Foundation.
You've put some effort into getting to this site so let me help. I've been working with people in crisis for over 30 years, the first 5 of them in an Emergency Room, later moving to do family work on an inpatient psychiatric unit. I teach other therapists now the importance of empathy in working with people struggling with anxiety, addiction, depression and in crisis. I have a private practice in New York City and in Westchester County.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
