Narrative Therapists in New York
I'm happy you're here. I'm an NYC-based mental health counselor passionate about co-creating healing relationships with teens 14+ and adults. I know that the past few years of a global pandemic and global unrest have been difficult, but its also allowed many of us to slow down and reflect more honestly on what's no longer serving us. Maybe it is an old habit, narrative, or belief system that's holding you back or maybe you've discovered something new about yourself you want to explore more deeply. Whatever's brought you to this courageous point, I'm honored to walk in this journey with you and help you embody your truth more fully.

I utilize narrative and psychodynamic modalities and work with individuals who are learning to cope with trauma and anxiety.
Attending therapy can be both beautiful and challenging, similar to life. A job promotion can lead to imposter syndrome, having a baby can lead to emotional exhaustion and frustration, or beginning a relationship can feel exciting and ignite fears of abandonment. As your therapist, I am here to support you in developing coping skills so the challenges in life feel more manageable. In working together, we can both give space to the more difficult moments and feel excitement for the beautiful things around you.

I also draw strongly from narrative therapy, which I appreciate for its focus on stories, ethics, and values in our lives.
I practice therapy because I believe in the human capacity for liberation and healing, and our ability to empower each other and collectively improve our lives. I don't know what living a life that you love and value would look like for you, but I'm excited to find out together. I've primarily worked with people with serious trauma histories. I’m especially experienced in working with LGBTQIA+ folks, and with the kink and poly/ENM communities. I know how important it is to not only be affirmed in your identities, but understood as someone connected to the larger world.

This technique helps you integrate those memories into a cohesive narrative so that they lose their hold on you and no longer define your life.
I support individuals facing depression, anxiety, trauma, and significant life transitions. In therapy, you’ll feel understood and seen, and discover new hope along the way. I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can talk and process everything at your own pace. I work with clients facing challenges & chronic stress, helping them explore problem areas while tapping into their inner strength and resilience. Facing big changes can feel overwhelming. Whether you're transitioning out of college, dealing with relationship challenges, therapy provides a safe space to explore your feelings & thoughts during these changes.

Are you grappling with themes of meaning and purpose? Feeling defined by your past, destined to repeat the same unfulfilling cycles for the unforeseeable future? Maybe it feels like the issue is your career, your relationship, or the city you’re living in. You may also be thinking that if you just lose some weight, get more sleep, make a little more money, or find some adventure, surely then you’d be happy. The truth is that you are not doomed to this kind of unending disconnection and dissatisfaction, nor are you destined to perpetuate the cycles of generations before you.

I use and eclectic, person-centered, existential approach, that also incorporates DBT, psychodynamic, CBT, and narrative reconstruction techniques.
We cannot change what has happened to us, but we can change what we do with it. I aim to empower clients to overcome triggers from past traumas that are creating obstacles in present. My experience of navigating the sometimes rough waters of understanding my own asexual, biracial identity, has created a drive in me to be a helping hand and an empathetic ally for all those who are trying to figure out who they are. With empathy, compassion, and acceptance, I serve as a guide to my clients' as they embark on a journey of self-exploration, as a witness to their stories, and as a partner in achieving their goals and desires.

My therapeutic style incorporates narrative therapy, EFT & SFT while also being poly and kink informed.
As a Black, queer, Caribbean/LatinX individual who practices therapy from a non-oppressive and radically authentic lens I draw on over ten years of experience working with women, children and communities of color around topics of equity, sexuality, education, LGBTQ+, and trauma. I use my knowledge and background to analyze issues with a strong understanding of the systems, personal history and survival skills that influence your identity today. I am interested in understanding 'personal language' (emotions and perspective) to address the current design of your relationships and encourage transformations better suited for your goals

I have worked in private practice for for five years and draw on a variety of modalities including ACT, Narrative Therapy, CBT, and Mindful Self Compassion.
Therapy is a safe space for you to be radically honest, understand your past and grow in the present. The ultimate goal of any therapy is for you to be more free and move past whatever might be preventing you from being your authentic self, and from having the life and relationships you want. I've supported a diverse client group struggling with various issues like anxiety, depression, obsessive thinking, attachment and relationship issues, grief and loss, creativity block struggles, postpartum, and substance use issues. Life presents us all with painful challenges, but with proper support, we can all learn to cope, and also thrive.

Are you feeling overwhelmed with the commitments you have in your life? Trying to balance it all while ensuring you consider yourself too? Having difficulty maneuvering these uncertain waters called life? I would like to help by discussing your goals, where you stand, and most importantly, where you would like to be. It is okay to be struggling, but I would like to help you with this heavy load by giving you a safe and supportive space to discuss it all and examine your life in unique ways that you have never considered before.

My orientation to therapy is humanistic, feminist, and I incorporate elements from CBT, mindfulness, and narrative therapy in my practice.
I work with a diverse range of clientele including young adults, those with Serious and Persistent Mental Illnesses, eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. I’ve worked for many years with under-resourced populations in New York City which has shaped my worldview and approach to therapy. My work has taught me to be an optimist and I've witnessed first-hand incredible growth and resiliency in those with whom I've worked with. I typically take a more modern approach to therapy and am non-judgmental, supportive, direct, and genuine.

Narrative Therapists
Is narrative therapy evidence-based?
Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.
How long does narrative therapy last?
Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.
Does narrative therapy work?
Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.
What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?
Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
