I also help parents develop a stronger connection and understanding of their child(ren) by providing advice, tools, and methods to advance their parenting skills and confidence.
Being a parent can be stressful, as you often find yourself wondering what you can do to help your child feel better, find emotional balance, increase their confidence and enhance their potential. It can be daunting to reach out to a therapist because you want to make sure that you find someone who deeply cares and connects with your child and can work with you, guiding and supporting your parenting journey. Imagine what it would feel like not to constantly worry about your child because you know that they feel better about themselves, can better regulate their feelings and behaviors, and are more in control of their life.

Are you afraid to tell your partner about your personal truths? When people are feeling alone, they are disconnected. In these moments of isolation our thoughts of being not understood, or even loved can create reactions and responses that are less helpful. I work with my clients to identify these feelings and responses in order to uncover more fitting approaches to our inter/intra personal relationships. Lasting change sometimes begins with direct feedback. In our setting authenticity and understanding flow both ways. My specialty is helping you navigate newness with validation, support and the tools to generalize our work, to your personal and professional lives.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience treating clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, and self-esteem issues. Whether you’re struggling to cope with day-to-day stressors, or trying to heal from a painful past experience, you don’t have to face it alone. We all have times in our lives when we need more support than our friends and family can provide. We all have experiences that seem overwhelming to face on our own. The decision to receive counseling services is not a declaration of weakness, rather it is an act of self-love and a demonstration of self-awareness.

Many of us are conditioned to believe that we must stuff our pain deep inside and move on. Not only can this be deeply harmful to our psyche, our bodies also hold trauma & pain in such a way that can impact our health at large. There is a common misconception that seeking help, in this case going to therapy, makes one "weak." Truth be told, asking for help demonstrates an incredible amount of bravery & resilience.

Understanding the whole person is of utmost importance. I am empowered to help people deal with and find relief for life's hurts. I help find the unique solutions to encourage health, happiness and well-being. I do this through a deep sense of understanding, compassion and personal experience. Over the past twenty five years as an educator, pastor, businessman and counselor, I have helped many people in their pursuit of healing and wholeness. These experiences have not only provided me with a greater understanding of people's needs, but they also have helped me develop solid solutions for professional treatment.

My objective is to empower you to be all that you can and want to be and to support you in establishing and maintaining balance and attaining joy. Sometimes, that means learning to accept the way things are... Voiding yourself of a nervous, urgent need to be what you are not, or controlling what you cannot. Other times, it means motivating you to move beyond procrastination, uncertainty, confusion, indecision or fear. And others, it means beginning a gentle healing journey through memories of pain and hurt to a new place of wholeness. Please see more at www.ortigao.com

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
