I am passionate about helping clients learn how to find meaning and empowerment in their lives and it is important to me that clients feel accepted, understood, and valued. The majority of my practice focuses on complex trauma and identity development. I often see clients who struggle with low self-esteem, life transitions, trauma and abuse experiences, gender and sexual identity, and relationships with others.

My goal is to foster an empathetic and vigorous community in which all people are guaranteed self-respect, distinction, and the chance to reach their goals. I use an eclectic style of therapy such as: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. I utilize effective coping mechanisms to instill self-understanding among clients and inspire them to embrace new attitudes and beliefs towards life circumstances. Dr. Tom was born in Israel and raised in florida in a family with unique values, which led her to a genuine appreciation for culture and individuality. Growing up with a Hebrew name that was frequently misunderstood in a primarily English-speaking society fostered cultural awareness from a very young age. However, this adversity combined with pride for her identity allowed her to recognize and embrace others’ diversity. The dichotomy of growing up in a suburban American society with certain outlooks, and then coming home to differing cultural perspectives helped her develop an expanded range of vision and acceptance of others.

EMDR trained. I serve individual clients and help clients heal from trauma. We may develop safety strategies moving forward. Clients will increase skills to take back their power and shrink unpleasant memories to a manageable level.

It takes courage to address the loneliness, heartache, fear and confusion we face as humans. I offer space for a person to untangle their hurt and confusion and address their messy emotions. I believe our stories matter. Our life experiences shape us. No one escapes suffering. Life is hard. Everyone has experienced a broken heart and shattered dreams. Experiences of abuse, rejection, and trauma contort the soul. Our soul responds to self, God and others with these contorted relational patterns that connect or sabotage relationships. Soul contortions are addressed with compassion and respect as we journey towards restoration.

I consider mental health counseling a profession in which my clients come to me because they feel stuck and want to change. Further, I believe that many people believe that change is too difficult, too painful, or simply not possible. In other words, stuck! My role as a counselor is to clarify the issues that create the muck that holds my clients back from healing, growth, and thriving. I help them discover that their lives will not get better by chance, but by change. I believe that the road to healing involves pursuing change.

We specialize in helping families with sleep concerns about their children. This may be a child who is brand new, and you'd like to establish healthy sleep routines before children can really regulate their sleep, or it might be a child who has chronic difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep or both. Either way, we've been through this with many families whose children have other factors that make sleep difficult like disruptive behaviors that make it hard to transition to sleep, or neurodevelopmental diagnoses that make it harder to have consistent high-quality sleep, like ADHD, autism, developmental delays, etc.

The Center for Specialized Psychology (CSP) was founded by Dr. Nina Badaan Shinway in 2017, with a focus on helping female survivors of domestic violence and other trauma related experiences. CSP's mission is to promote healing and recovery for women who have experienced unfortunate life circumstances. CSP focuses on helping women heal, energize and become aware of their inner strengths. Treatment is provided via a range of theoretical approaches that are integrated and tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual patient.
