Our species is unique: we’re storytellers. Some write novels or films, others are great raconteurs. But we all create stories about our lives, filtered through the lens of experience. These stories affect how we relate to others and the choices we make. At the core of my practice is the intention to help you recognize the stories you tell yourself. Through a collaborative process you’ll gain an understanding of why you create counter-productive or harmful narratives. Being able to identify these tendencies will enable you to change your perceptions of yourself and others and guide you to make more fulfilling choices.

Note: I am transitioning to ketamine assisted psychedelic (KAP) and MDMA once that becomes available. I am a master therapist and trainer. I love exploring how people have become distorted from their true nature and lose touch with what matters most to them. The work is to help us all clear the distortions so we can return to who we are: awake, kind, free. I often practice using EMDR, Buddhist Psychology, spiritual practice, exploring the nature of satisfaction/dissatisfaction and the nature of self, as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Our lives can lead us to existential confusion, self-doubt, and seeming psychological impasses that can affect our relationships, careers, creative life, and health. Patterns of behavior can seem intractable, with the past resurfacing in the present and managing day-to-day stressors becoming a burden. I will collaborate with you on cultivating a non-judgmental curiosity about your experience, both past and present, and on finding more freedom and agency to lead life in a fulfilling and healthy way.

I am very fortunate to combine my three loves: people, psychology and dogs. Over the years my dogs have accompanied me to my office and have been of great therapeutic value and pleasure in their interaction with patients of all ages. Therapy is an exciting adventure in which therapist and patient agree to explore the patient's life, dreams, problems, fears, hopes and aspirations. As therapist it is my responsibility to guide: sometimes lead, share and always to jointly explore who the individual is. While everyones' therapy is different, therapy is the opportunity to pull ones' life together and develop the courage to change.

Ray DiStephan, LCSW. I have been working with teens and their families for the past 28 years. I have an in-depth understanding of public education and special education. I also work with adults and focus on building a personal rapport with every individual that I work with. Together we look for and find some strategies and a few answers. Generally, yes. But each individual is different, and his/her/their reason for being in counseling can greatly vary. Goals are an important piece, but only after some trust is established.

I am experienced in helping clients recapture the person they previously were. Many clients say to me, "I just want to go back to being the person I used to be", and that's exactly what we focus on. Clients also often say to me, "I just don't know what to do or what I want", and we work together until we figure out how to alleviate their confusion. We achieve this in various ways, most often through exploration of the presenting issues, examination of past relationships and significant experiences as well as decision-making and behavioral patterns.

I proudly identify as an LGBTQ therapist who believes in a therapeutic relationship that is stepped in active-listening, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. In turn, this allows for clients to feel safe and secure when we engage in a therapeutic relationship. Therapy is about being yourself without the judgment of the world; and it is a discovery process that gives you the opportunity to visualize possibilities in life. My attention is drawn to connecting with clients, being collaborative and interactive, and learning how to help clients become unstuck in life.

I try to help those who are struggling to reduce their emotional and behavioral conflicts and stressors in order to achieve their potential in life while in relation to the people, places and things they depend upon in their life. When a person is capable in becoming more fully aware or mindful of their feelings, thoughts and actions; while further developing a reflective, tolerant capacity; and continues working towards attempting achievement of their needs and wants where possible or learning acceptance, grieving, and moving on, then I think we are living as fully as possible.

When we live allowing the past to dictate the future we neglect the present moment and the ability for change. My focus as a therapist is to learn from the past insofar as informs the present day, which will make for a brighter future. My goal as a clinician is to help bring my clients clarity so that they can better manage their stressors, relationships, and create new perspectives. I use an eclectic approach of therapy with my clients as each person is different and requires a form therapy suited for who they are. My specialty is in working with anxiety or depression as well as individuals who have a history of substance abuse.

Dealing with overwhelming emotions and stress can often be an isolating experience, but it does not have to be. My goal as a clinician is to create a safe setting for healing through compassion, understanding, and trust. Our work together will focus on gaining a stronger understanding of yourself while obtaining skills and techniques to forge meaning through difficult moments in life. I believe that high quality therapy comes from a customized approach by taking evidence-based methodologies and tailoring them to an individual’s personality and needs.

Reaching out for help is the first therapeutic act. It takes courage, vulnerability and trust. Successful therapy is dependent on trust and vulnerability and at the core of this is feeling understood and accepted. In our first session I will give you a picture of what to expect from our work together and provide a safe and non-judgmental space where you can talk about what you are currently struggling with. As your therapist, my job is to offer you my mind, my attention, my empathy and my honesty in service of your growth and development.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
