I am integrative in my theoretical approach and employ a variety of theories and techniques, often drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamics, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness.
As a counselor, my primary goal is enabling my clients to discover the path towards healing, hope, and growth. The environment that I provide is one of warmth and safety and one in which my clients can explore the ways in which events of the past affect them in the present, enhancing quality of life and examining the barriers to healing and growth. I work with a broad range of clients, including individuals, couples, teens, and families on a variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relational problems, addiction, and life stress. I love working with couples and am Prepare-Enrich certified and Gottman-trained.

After completing my undergraduate studies at Mercer University, I embraced the life of an entrepreneur. This journey brought many valuable insights that enhanced my understanding of human lived experiences. To a greater extent, this period heightened my ability to effectively connect and empathize with people of all walks of life. Over time I have adopted techniques from many disciplines within the field of psychotherapy. DBT, CBT and Solution Focused Therapy are those I most frequently employ. They offer much needed practical tools for patients in moments of acute crisis and provide the critical avenues to hope and motivation.

I often draw from evidence-based interventions such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I believe the past often shows up in the present and I strive to create a space where we can honor your story and help you feel grounded in the here and now. Having lived in several parts of the world and experienced many different cultures, I have found what remains universal are the ways in which people tell stories and make meaning of their experiences. This is a powerful tool in the therapeutic space as well and one I make room for. By focusing on the counseling relationship, my hope is to cultivate a space that is welcoming and free of judgment.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
