Life is so much more than whether or not we are breathing, or if our biological processes are working well. Life involves our own capacities for growth, adaptation, and responses to internal and external stimuli. In other words, we are living beings but are we truly living? Do you approach each day with hope and focus and want support in creating plans? Are you struggling to identify who you are at your very core and how to manage your ever demanding and changing world? Can you define what living your life means to you? Are you growing, adapting, and responding in healthy and harmonious ways? If not, would you like to?

At times, everyone feels overwhelmed. School, friends, family, work, activities. While you've been working hard because it's what you've been told to do, overachieving and people-pleasing are not sustainable. Stress and burnout take over, and you find yourself irritable, tearful, anxious, and depressed. Soon, responsibilities and relationships start to be pushed aside, and it's challenging to tend to your own emotional and physical health. As a clinician at Patch Counseling, I aim to empower teens and adults by providing a non-judgmental, collaborative place to reestablish your voice, regain balance and rebuild self-acceptance.

My specialty areas have varied over the years including codependency, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, grief, play therapy and sandtray.
"I believe that each person has unlimited potential within themself! It is my role to assist a person in finding the answers to the dilemnas' they may be facing. Often someone is experiencing a high level of stress through a current life circumstance that brings up feelings or grief from the past. When this happens, part of the therapy process is to deal with the "unfinished business" to access more energy to bring to the present. As a Marriage and Family therapist, I focus on relationship issues including patterns of communication that can improve to develop more satisfying relationships too.

I can help with anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, parenting, life transitions, and more. My therapeutic approach is strengths based and solution focused. Your therapeutic journey can be incredibly rewarding and difficult at the same time. Anxiety, trauma, and depression can make us feel lost and the road through is muddy and overwhelming. This is why having a guide that can understand you and meet you where you are, is incredibly important. It is my goal to help you navigate this voyage as well as hold and work through complex emotions as they fight with each other while at the same time cohabitating in the same space. I look forward to taking those first steps with you and take this journey together.

To establish understanding at it's fullest potential, I utilize TF-CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing which are effective, evidence-based treatment methods for individuals struggling with eating disorders, depression, self esteem, anxiety, relational conflicts, trauma, and other concerns.
From the dawn of time, humans have struggled with mental health issues. Only until recently, we have started to talk about it. When I first started to talk about my mental health, it wasn’t easy. I felt sadness, anxiety, and shame AND then after many therapy sessions, experience, and love, I found hope again. I found my hope through bravery in speaking about my struggles, in my loved ones supporting me, and within myself as I started to deeply understand my story. Together, we can help you find your hope again.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
