I have 34 years teaching experience with at risk high school students. Extensive internship training with alcohol and substance dependent patients equips me to work with clientele with these issues. I am an ordained minister with 3 years of full time Christian service which equips me for pastoral counseling. Having personally experienced the pain of divorce, I can empathize with spouses who are experiencing marital discord.

Making the decision to call a therapist is scary for most of us. It is usually at a time when we feel vulnerable or things have reached a crisis point. I can help give you objective feedback so that you can understand and make sense of your thoughts and feelings. In therapy you will learn new coping skills that you can use, not just in this incident, but in future ones. You don't have to be alone as you try and figure things out. I believe I can help.

You’re looking for an approachable therapist who can help you build a better life for yourself. Someone who you can feel deeply seen by, who will celebrate your wins, walk beside you in your pain, and can help you find relief. Whether you have been struggling with low self esteem, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, or finding your path in life, I can help. Maybe you are pregnant or a new mom and are struggling with that transition or a difficult birth experience. Life can be painful and sometimes things happen to us that make it hard to find our center, to let our guard down, or to know that we are good enough.

I began providing psychotherapy in Contra Costa in 1996 while obtaining my MA Degree with a Specialization in Couple and Family Therapy at John F. Kennedy's Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Since then I have continued working in Solano County with individual adults, children & teens, and their families, and couples. I facilitated men's groups in a jail-based substance abuse treatment program for four years while working at Youth And Family Services until 2005. I've been in private practice since then.

I often explain that psychotherapy is like physical therapy for the brain. With a combination of a safe, nurturing environment and evidence-based methods, you can develop new “pathways” in your brain and process your thoughts and feelings to help you heal and grow. I will approach our work together with a genuine curiosity and seek to collaboratively explore the different parts of your story. Having lived in several different countries, I have great respect for and extensive experience working with people from various backgrounds.

Most of us lug around a suitcase full of our thoughts, feelings, family history and past experiences and have no idea what's in there. Our current responses to and experience of life come from the contents of that suitcase. Together in therapy we gently unpack it. We will see what is working for you, what needs more support and what has served it's purpose but no longer works. I work collaboratively and am curious about all the things that make you who you are. I am particularly interested in working with people who feel misunderstood or unimportant.

In Network with OPTUM, Optum EAP, Oscar, United Behavioral Health. (online virtual counseling only) When someone is in conflict, some common false beliefs are that my feelings, my worth, and my value come from outside of me, therefore someone else should take care of me. As a result are power struggles in which each person tries to control the other. The way out is to change the system by changing those beliefs. It is only when love becomes appreciation instead of dependence on the other person that this will happen.

Adolescence can be a difficult period of transition for many. Peer pressure, changing environments and non-traditional or abrupt family changes can be challenging for a child as well as a parent. Finding a connection with someone who can help manage and overcome feelings of inadequacy is the first step to wellness.

Hello fellow my "over-thinker" & "under-feeler" ... I see you. As a Latina woman, I understand that growing up in a culture that wasn't able to teach me how to identify, navigate and process what I was feeling, in order to understand who I was ... leaving me feeling "lost & stuck." You may be feeling symptoms of anxiety, depression and maybe even lacking to feel exciting emotions. Not to worry, most people feel this way in their lives, you're not alone in this season/moment of your life. If you'd like a better understanding of how to get more connected to your emotions and feel more at peace, I will be your guide in obtaining it.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in California?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
