Therapy can be challenging - it takes courage to look directly at parts of ourselves that we feel ashamed of. Going through this process with someone who gets you can be transformative. I'm deeply curious about how you see the world and work to create an environment where you can be, too. Maybe you have learned to cope with feelings in ways that are hurting you or your relationships. Maybe you're struggling with a tendency to isolate or hurt yourself, with self-hatred, with long-term patterns that you feel hopeless about. Every person has a unique ability to change & grow. The goal of therapy is to remove obstacles to your growth.

Psychotherapy is a transformative journey that can lead to self-discovery and empowerment. I work with children, adolescents, and adults to help with a spectrum of life's challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, issues of self-esteem, emotion dysregulation, and social anxiety. I aim to create a safe space for exploration and growth, fostering an emotional environment that empowers individuals to delve into their thoughts, feelings, and unconscious motivations. I work through a psychodynamic lens, helping to construct a narrative that links the impact of our early experiences to who we are today.

I believe that the answers we search for are already within us, waiting to be discovered. As your therapist, my goal is to accompany you as we explore these truths together and create a space where you feel safe expressing even your most difficult feelings. Whether you come individually or as a couple, I invite you to bring your most authentic self to our sessions, knowing that I am here to listen, support, and challenge you when needed. I use a playful and empathetic approach when getting to the root of what is holding you or your relationship back, while simultaneously considering the impact of broader contexts.

First and foremost, it takes courage to put your mental health first so, welcome! This is the most courageous thing you’ll do. The fact that you’ve committed to seeking out treatment is the biggest step. Taking this step can be scary and frustrating. Change is scary, but it is also human…. It’s actually very normal. I am here to navigate this change space with you. I believe it is valuable to include families in this process. There is nothing more important than communication, and being vulnerable.

If you find yourself struggling with anxiety, depression, irritability or loneliness, you are clearly not alone, given how many therapists there are here! As a psychotherapist with 20 years of experience, I practice a powerful mindfulness-based intervention called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Often psychological pain has more to do with how we fight and judge our thoughts and feelings, and we end up in an exhausting internal struggle that we cannot win. We will work together to explore this struggle, gain distance from it, and learn skills and strategies to reduce impact and influence on your life.

It's wonderful that you are here making the effort to have more peace and goodness in your life. Even with great challenges, you can have more calm and peace in your body, mind, and relationships. Move past places where you're stuck and connect more deeply with yourself and life, for a more authentic and fulfilling life. You have a very safe, non-judgmental space to talk with me about anything. I've been told many times that people can open up with me in ways that they haven't ever been able to before; also, that I have a calming effect, and that I've helped many people majorly transform their life. I'm happy to support you, too.

It’s important to have a safe place to talk about tough things and about daily life - a place where there are no "shoulds" or expectations to fit in a certain box. This is where healing can begin. Therapy can be a powerful step toward that healing and relief—and working towards creating the lives and relationships we want. Finding a therapist who helps you feel safe, supported, and challenged is central to this process.

I most commonly see individuals who struggle with anxiety and depression and couples seeking to deepen their connection, improve communication, reduce conflict, and work through past wounds. My approach is an eclectic one, most heavily drawing from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Therapy with me is engaging, supportive, and outcome-oriented, aiming to assist clients in boosting interpersonal skills, coping mechanisms, and self-worth.

My work with individuals begins with establishing an emotionally safe space in which we can explore what brings you into therapy. We then tailor our work to your specific issues and needs, be they contemporary stressors or long standing vestiges of the past -- or both. We may discover core conflicts, psychic remnants of past relationships and experiences, that contribute to your current symptoms or show up in your life as self-defeating patterns in your relationships. Re-working these past struggles can help release you from feeling emotionally trapped, so that you have greater freedom and authorship in your life.

I am an experienced therapist. I value and look to create a collaboration in working with my patients. My practice is both psychoanalytic and psychodynamic. The goal is to facilitate better functioning in interpersonal relationships, relieve anxiety and depression, and to achieve more gratification experiencing the present, as well as in the future. I consider personal history and dreams as relevant as the anecdotal material of life ongoing. We know ourselves better than anyone else. This work is aimed at discovering what we already know and understanding it and being able to make good use of it.

I am a NY and NJ Licensed Therapist. Talk therapy is not just "talking about your problems"; it is also working toward solutions. Focusing on the past can help explain things in your life, but focusing on the present can help you cope with the present and prepare for the future. I can help you take control of your life, stop the turmoil, find meaning and happiness, so you can make healthier choices about your present and future, and not allow others to make those choices for you.

CREATIVITY DEVELOPMENT COUNSELING: I am an artist and psychotherapist with special training and extensive experience counseling visual artists, writers, musicians, actors and other creative professionals. Establishing a life which supports and nourishes one's creativity is an enormous challenge. There are conflicts of time versus money, structure vs. freedom, the need for connection to others and the need for solitude and creative time. Societal values and internalized parental expectations exert an unconscious influence on what we believe is possible.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
