As an Indian and African American, I have a cultural sensitivity toward everybody at I encounter.
Anger, grief, anxiety, ADHD, depression, and other issues are significant causes of personal and family struggles. As a whole family therapist, I assist the family and the individuals within the family to find solutions to issues that are negatively impacting each member and the family as a whole. In addition, I offer anger management individual therapy and group sessions. As families are my focus, I work with people of all ages. I see individuals, couples, and family units. It is always possible for any family situation to become more stabile and healthy when given the proper tools. I would be honored to assist you and your family,

To my black and brown men: Therapy is taboo and those around us have perpetuated the idea that needing help is a sign of weakness. Middle finger to all that. I have created a safe space for you to talk about your things. All the things. We can label the "things" as depression, anxiety, or effects from trauma, but I'm good just calling them "things." The things that keep you up. The things that create doubt. The things that make you feel like an imposter. The things that make you feel less of a man, a husband, a dad, a brother, a friend, an employee, a student, an athlete, a human.

I am a lover of people. My goal is to help individuals trade ashes for beauty. That is a journey I am built for. I've been a counselor for what seems like all my life. I was always the one people would confide in and speak with. It didn't matter the age. I have worked with various populations to include adolescents and older adults. I specialize in coaching others to their potential. I respect everyone and give my undivided attention. I understand that life can bring challenges and difficulties. I want to help people through those times.

Greetings, I am Dr. Seleena Smith. I recently made the decision to pivot from offering therapy to life coaching in an effort to have a greater impact on and more access to historically oppressed and underserved populations, more autonomy, and true freedom in my life. This shift led to the creation of REAL Liberation Coaching and Consultation Services (Restore, Empower, Align, and Love) and I am focused on helping my community heal. I strive to help high functioning clients find liberation and joy in their lives in a discrete, nonjudgmental, and safe space, while also helping them to reach their personal and professional goals.

I love to work with individuals who are wanting to dig deeper and address unresolved inner turmoil which may be increasing symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. I also love being a part of those who are working on trauma to not only decrease their symptoms, but who are also wanting to increase their quality of life. I love to give clients tools and exercises that are not only useful in the present moment, but that can be ongoing and passed down to future generations. PSA: Please email to start services as I may not be able to phone calls due to current therapy sessions. I typically respond within 24 hours to all email inquiries

Life continuously throws curve balls and coping can be difficult when you are a child and are not in direct control of your environment and situations. Sometimes children need someone to sit with and help process so many complicated emotions, feelings, and thoughts. I appreciate empowering the clients I meet with and I believe in the transformative value of having a listening ear. I want to be that person for your child and encourage them to shine through all of it. I believe your child can be a fierce light in this world despite their circumstances.

Are you looking for someone to provide an empathetic, safe space to adjust and process life changes? Are you looking for someone to hold space and also challenge you in areas to grow? You being here is a great first step and shows how brave you are. I am currently a LPC-Candidate working to finish my last hours of licensure. I have experience working with ages 12-37 and working with populations that may have symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression that may impact them. I also have experience with those that have experienced abuse, trauma, and other unexpected life transitions. I enjoy working with minority populations.

Do you have a hard time identifying with yourself or others? Do you feel like you are secretly an outsider and find it difficult to connect or relate to others? I can tell you that I have been there and can relate to the emotional hardships of being you and navigating life and relationships. As a single mother and a military veteran, I know firsthand the amount of strength and courage it takes to believe in yourself and to be able to follow through with your goals.

The bravery it takes to begin therapy is often underestimated. So is the pain. That pain is often a symptom of a psychological wound that needs to be treated with care and attentiveness. Working with me feels similar to physical therapy: soothing at times and challenging at others, but ultimately, healing.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
