Difficult life experiences can make coping with daily events challenging. Some people isolate themselves in a variety of ways due to fear of burdening or not being understood by those around them. For others, unprocessed adversity from childhood can leave them feeling a disconnect from the world, loved ones, and even their own bodies. The affects can be feelings of depression, anxiety, shame and/or self-doubt. Counselling is a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore the parts of yourself you have difficulty exploring elsewhere and get tools to help you live the life you want.

As human beings, we all have complex emotions and having the courage to express, process and understand our emotions can bring new found strength. I work with individuals and couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT for individuals helps you process your emotions and make sense of them so that you can use your emotions as a guide. EFT for couples helps couples make sense of the vulnerable emotions you are each feeling underneath the reactivity present in conflict or the disconnection that results from withdrawal. As you make sense of one another's vulnerability, space opens up for compassion and understanding.

When I work with individuals, they often tell me that they can't turn off their thoughts or struggle with overwhelming feelings. I take a mindfulness approach to therapy using the ACT model, that helps you learn to manage and cope with difficult thoughts and feelings, and commit to action that enriches your life. Do you feel disconnected in your relationship or stuck in conflict? Many couples I meet often feel discouraged and lonely in their relationships. I work with couples who are experiencing conflict, loss of connection or overcoming an affair.

Hello and welcome! I am a Psychotherapist/Registered Social Worker with over 20 years of clinical practice with children, teens, adults and families with complex needs. I work with my clients' strengths to build coping skills and resiliency while simultaneously exploring recurring themes stemming from attachment wounds or unmet needs. Having one foot in the present and one in the past helps determine how early relational experiences often continue to impact current challenges and relationships. Feeling comfortable with your therapist is first and foremost, so I offer a free phone consultation to see if we may be a good fit.

My therapeutic approach is centered on creating an accepting and responsive environment. Beyond that, I view therapy as a process that facilitates a healthier relationship with oneself and proactively disrupts patterns causing distress. I balance insight and understanding with change-focused, effective coping strategies that comprehensively address areas of difficulty and challenge. This is often achieved by leveraging awareness of underlying emotions, unmet needs, and unresolved experiences to pave the way towards symptom reduction and meaningful change, noticeably enhancing quality of life.

We can make change in our lives by understanding why we feel the way we do and by being in tune with who we are. Once we get to know ourselves better, we have the power to grow and overcome barriers. Whether you are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression or anger, or if you are encountering family challenges, relationship problems, or addictions, I can help you make the change you are looking for in a safe, open and nurturing environment.

You already have the capacity and wisdom to heal and change, but it helps to do this in relationship with a therapist you trust. In support of people struggling with a broad range of issues (including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, loneliness, grief, ADHD/ executive function deficits, and LGBTQ+ issues) I work collaboratively with clients to better access their innate capacities for healing. You'll hear me say the word "part" a lot. I predominantly draw on IFS's (Internal Family Systems therapy) "parts" work. The idea of parts seems intuitive to some but can be a huge paradigm shift for others.

Are you feeling squeezed by pressure from work, multiple responsibilities, and your own expectations? That life is coming at you while you still need to process the past, figure yourself out, and learn how to love what you find? Do you get mixed up about where to push and where to give yourself grace? Perhaps your thoughts can be unkind and your body is quick to panic or shut down. Maybe you want to be better at accessing your capacity for calm, compassion, and action (whether for yourself or others). Understandably, you just need help with it all.

You aren't alone. For many of us, the past few years have tested limits of our resilience. When you're overwhelmed, feeling down, anxious, upset or even confused about what you're feeling, you might find that your ability to cope is fragile or missing altogether. Sometimes you withdraw or act in ways you wish you didn't. You may have tried different things to feel better but the strategies you've been using aren't working so well or you don't know where to begin to fix what's wrong. But you're not broken ! It's likely that you just want to feel more connected to yourself and to others but something is getting in the way.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
