A sense of vitality in our lives, freedom to make choices, satisfaction at work and in our personal relationships, a connection to a full range of our own emotions- these are often aspirations that are elusive to many of us. Developing a trusting, collaborative relationship with a therapist, can be an important step in moving towards these goals. By understanding ourselves, our patterns, and our challenges more clearly, we start to feel better and function more effectively in our lives and relationships.

I work with individuals who are struggling with issues that interfere with their overall life satisfaction and level of happiness. My basic optimism that people can change drives my practice philosophy. I recognize that there are motivational factors that interfere with people's readiness for change and therefore see myself as a change agent to help the individuals I work with to become ready and then able to make changes in terms of coping skills, relationship skills, managing mood instability, substance issues, eating disorders and other compulsive behaviors. My years of practice experience and training have prepared me to offer skilled interventions and expertise.

Therapy is choosing yourself. Boldly. It's a lantern-lit excursion, to seek out your one-true-voice, amidst a great din. It is a space to find your sovereignty, wounds, and all. A workshop, laboratory, and garden plot, in which to build, test, and grow: so you can hone your inner leader, teammate, partner, friend, and family member. I work with the veils and walls that stand between you and becoming your best self. If you are here, you are already bold.

Kenwood Psychological Services is a match-making service. We do not ask you to choose a therapist from a list of pictures and descriptions. Instead, we get to know you - your background, your personality, your needs - and then WE choose the therapist we think would be the best for you. We work with a group of more than 200 Psychologists and Social Workers, each of whom we know personally. They work from their own private offices around the city and surrounding areas. Most of them also have an active on-line practice, which makes them available to anyone in New York state.

I continue to be amazed by the power of relationships to heal the deepest, most persistent sources of pain. I am committed to helping people make contact with the parts of themselves that are whole and healthy, those that remain intact despite the traumas and difficulties they have endured. I do this by paying close attention to the feelings and thoughts that emerge in the present, while also listening for outdated, limiting or wounded parts of the self that deserve care. Leading with my belief in the potential to heal, we work collaboratively to harness innate resources for growth, resilience, and change.

Are you constantly juggling the expectations of others without considering yourself? With over 30 years of private practice, I have seen major changes in people resolving problems and changing their lives for the better. You may come in with issues such as relationships difficulties, anxiety, depression, narcissism, sexual identity, coping with stress, self-sabotage, lack of confidence, problems with aging, and others, which we can deal with together. In therapy, we have an opportunity to identify repetitive patterns and assumptions that interfere with a satisfying life. I bring an analytically informed approach, while maintaining a focus on your present life and interactions, as well as using the relationship between us as a valuable source of information.

I appreciate that we, as humans, do the best we can with whatever resources are available. My function, as a therapist, is to be an additional resource -- of support, emotional safety, and connection. Our sessions will focus on exploring your individual experience and increasing your awareness of your self and how you operate in your world. I believe that having a safe environment and willing partner with whom to examine the full spectrum of how you are in your context - with all its inherent possibilities and limitations - facilitates agency and personal growth. It can also provide a sense of wholeness and corresponding relief.

Our exposure to stress and trauma is more common than we let on. What we carry within us already, whether through our experiences with racism or discrimination, childhood upbringing, loss, illness or other life events, also informs our repetitive ways of thinking and behaving that may not be helpful to our mental well-being. Despite the prevalence of trauma, we also have the capacity for resiliency. My goal is to tap into this strength by offering the support, skills and interventions that can increase our sense of purpose and thrive.

To heal is to touch with love that which was previously touched by fear. We all have times when we need extra support to work through life's challenges. Whether it be mental health concerns, trauma, relationship dynamics, identity exploration, life transitions, family relations, work stressors, or any other difficult circumstance; you don't have to walk this journey alone. Together we will work to empower you to put your needs first and take steps to reach your goals. Everyone has a story and is worthy of space to tell it, and together we will honor, heal, and learn from your experiences.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
