Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a brutally painful disorder.
I have a lot of experience treating anxiety disorders, specifically Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as well as depression. While I have a private practice now, I worked for years at MassGeneral in Salem, Ma with adolescents and adults. I tend to get along with most people easily, and as I work out of my home, I tend to incorporate my dogs. Allowing the animals to be part of it often does wonders for clients. I work from a strength-based perspective and I believe that people can become who they want to become if they are willing to do the work. I believe in people.

I specialize in helping autistic children, teens, and young adults who struggle with challenges associated with OCD and Anxiety. My approach is grounded in evidence-based, contextual behavior therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Clinical Behavior Analysis (CBA). I am particularly interested in helping autistic clients find self-determination, vibrancy and meaning - in the face of a social world that does not always understand their unique perspective and potential.

My focus areas are anxiety, depression, OCD and life transitions.
Sometimes when life gets hard, it is difficult to ask for help. I aim to provide a safe and welcoming environment that encourages feeling seen and being heard to make that first step a little easier. I am passionate about helping adolescents, college students and young adults understand themselves better and build on their specific strengths. Together, we will work on adapting and personalizing tools to assist in learning how to regulate emotions, explore why certain patterns of thinking and behaving exist, and heal past wounds.

My specialty is working with children, adolescents and adults struggling with OCD and anxiety. I previously worked at McLean’s residential OCD facility and Rogers' anxiety/OCD residential, partial and intensive programs. For anxiety and OCD, the gold-standard therapy is a powerful approach called exposure therapy (ERP). Through this systematic process people learn how to face their fears and no longer be controlled by them, which provides a liberating and confidence building experience. I also use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and compassion-focused therapy (CFT).

As an LICSW and LADC, I offer a variety of skills and specialities in areas of substance abuse, anxiety, anger, OCD, life transitions, relationship issues and mood disorders.
Currently accepting group members! Through my experience as a therapist in the mental health and substance abuse field, I've come to believe that change occurs through gaining insight into our own thinking processes. When we begin to learn more about our thinking patterns, which generally arise from past experiences, we begin to change the way we feel. The therapeutic journey begins by identifying reoccurring themes or what I term "addictions." The process continues by coaching you to master your triggers and develop counter actions. It is through this process that you will be empowered to handle your life problems with more ease.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
