I have been working with the Transgender/Gender Variant community since 1999.
My therapy perspective is as diverse as the community I serve. My work with individuals is geared toward strengthening their sense of self. I also facilitate peer support groups and small intimate therapeutic groups. My therapeutic model is a combination of Rogerian (person-centered therapy), and the Empowerment Approach (the connection between "social and economic justice" and "individual pain and suffering"). Family Systems Theory (connected to a living system); and Feminist Theory (gender and related concepts remain central to feminist social work theory). With this blend, the entire overarching concepts are framed.

With an MA in Mental Health Counseling, I have an advanced certificate in LGBTQ health, education, and social services.
The counseling I provide is often focused on relationship conflicts, sex-related topics, gender identity, internal family systems, self-esteem issues, anxiety and depression. I often see clients who may want to make improvements to their confidence, relationships, or simply have a safe space to discuss everyday issues regarding their mental well-being.

I'm a queer identifying and neurodivergent therapist committed to providing exceptional therapy that is accessible, affordable & inclusive.
You dread getting out of bed each morning- you feel like you have nothing left to give. You have fantasized about running away at least once this week. You’ve neglected your own needs, and have no time left over for non-work related needs. You haven’t seen your friends or family in weeks. You become overwhelmed when you watch the news, and spend far too much time scrolling through social media. You can’t tell if you are burnt out, depressed or anxious: or all three. You've gotten to a point where you need some help...

In the journey of life, we all face challenges that can weigh heavily on us. Sometimes these challenges, and the effort expended in overcoming them, cast a heavy darkness on our heart and mind. Whether those challenges are grappling with anxiety, navigating the depths of depression, confronting past traumas, or navigating the complexities of identity within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum - know that you are not alone.

The process of finding a therapist and beginning treatment can feel overwhelming. You are showing your strength and hope by starting this process. I am a psychotherapist who works with individuals, specializing in the particular needs of the LGBTQ population. I have also worked extensively with clients struggling with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationships, gender identity and sexuality, trauma, grief and loss, parenting, and life transitions. I view therapy as a collaborative effort, and I believe that a successful therapy depends primarily on a strong relationship between client and therapist.

I also specialize in LGBTQ+ issues, being a Queer therapist myself.
People are complex, with intricate issues and complicated histories. The ideal client for my virtual private practice is someone who is willing to open up and take the time to explain what makes them “tick”, someone who is ready to take a journey of self-discovery and is interested in finding tangible skills to help them with a variety of needs. Change will not happen in one session, but it can start its course…

Therapy is not about fixing you as if you're broken. To me, it's about recovering from suffering, and connecting deeply and authentically to your thoughts, feelings, desires and dreams. It can be difficult to begin a new therapy relationship and be vulnerable, especially when relationships have been harmful in the past. I think taking the risk anyway reflects an inherent pull toward repairing the old wounds that restrict our capacity to live freely and joyfully. I love working with LGBTQIA folks, relationships, trauma, and difficulties with shame, self-love and acceptance.

As a queer therapist, I am experienced with and enjoy supporting fellow LGBTQIA+ community members. I work with clients determined to unearth the hold trauma has on their lives, losses and unexpected life events that paralyze them, and work to challenge and ultimately change coping mechanisms that are not serving them. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many clients throughout my career, including but not limited to the LGBTQIA+ communities, sexual assault/domestic violence survivors, those experiencing severe mental illness and chronic medical conditions, and those affected by systemic racial disparities.

I am queer, Jewish, and live in Brooklyn.
Do you want a non-judgmental space where you can show up as your full self? I'm Zohar, and I hold an MSW from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and an MFA from Boston University. Therapy has helped me better understand my own behavior and has motivated me to change patterns that no longer serve me. My positive experience with therapy has inspired me to support others in exploring their own narratives, values, and actions.

My additional areas of expertise include trauma, EMDR, IFS ("parts work") anxiety, depression, communication skills and issues specific to the LGBTQ community.
Grief is the price we pay for loving deeply and having to let go. It can result from the death of a loved one, end of a relationship, or the loss of a job, home or former identity. Grief can feel simultaneously empty, yet heavy. It can cause confusion of how to go on living a "normal" life. It can also feel like no one else could possibly understand. After a decade of working alongside individuals who were dying, providing counseling to care givers and loved ones, I understand the significant pain and trauma of grieving. I also know how to help in healing and restoring hope.
