Teletherapy via internet or phone is available due to the recent crisis and CDC recommendations to minimize leaving the home. I have been in private practice over 38 years as a licensed psychologist, providing counseling in a confidential and professional manner using primarily a cognitive behavior therapy approach. Problems addressed include anxiety, depression, parenting, and relationships. My treatment philosophy emphasizes a collaborative relationship between myself and my clients, with a focus of the development of strengths as the preferred way to address problems and weaknesses, as well as legitimate goal in its own right.

I work with children/adolescents (and their parents) with involvement in the juvenile justice system, learning difficulties, poor social skills, blended family issues, and parent/child conflict.
My private practice was founded in October 2003, providing outpatient and in-home counseling services to over 300 children and families. I have extensive experience working with adults and couples. Since October 2013, I have treated over 250 adults and their family members at my outpatient office in Alpha. With 26 years of expertise, my approach is simple: to facilitate and promote change by assisting clients to make healthy decisions and choices in their lives. Treatment is also focused on helping clients learn how to effectively manage stressors and regulate their mood in order to increase or maintain their level of functioning.

I believe that effective Psychotherapy is the result of many factors. Two of the most important factors, in my experience, are: Technical Competence of the Psychologist and the Therapeutic Match of Client and Psychologist. The Psychologist's Technical Competence develops from the Psychologist's education, ongoing training, and clinical experience. A good Therapeutic Match enables the client to feel confident in and comfortable with the Psychologist. In my experience Clients are able to assess Therapeutic Match within one to two sessions; on the other hand, it may take longer for Clients to assess the technical competence of their Psychologist.

Family Needs: Family needs are Love, Sense of Belonging, Mutual respect, and Shared communication. The family wants harmonious relationships through mutual respect and communication. The lack of these qualities in the home have caused strife in the family, to the point where it becomes maladaptive. The family wants qualitative relationships with one another. They want their relationships to be positive, meaningful and purposeful. They want and need this because the family unit is interconnected. There is a symbiotic relationship amongst all family members.

I believe that listening is crucial in counseling; listening not just to words, but also for feelings. Sometimes people seek therapy to clarify their thoughts and emotions; or they may be looking for specific strategies to find relief from worry or sadness, or for help with a relationship. My experience and training in multiple modes of psychotherapy allows me to help people with these concerns. While starting counseling may seem scary, it can be the first step toward feeling happier and less worried.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
