It may seem difficult and overwhelming making that call or walking into an office to talk to a stranger, and that’s ok. I commend you for taking the first steps towards starting therapy, and I am here to join you in your journey towards self-discovery and self-improvement. As a therapist I will assist you in finding and being able to utilize the tools you may already have to make changes for the better.

I work primarily with adolescents, children, and young adults who have had very difficult experiences and need a safe, playful, and steady partner to explore the impact of these events on their lives. As an out queer clinician I also work regularly with LGBTQIA+ clients who seek a therapist aware of the complexity of those identities in the world, as well as with parents looking to better develop skills to support trans or queer-identified children. I recognize racism and white supremacy as forms of social oppression that provoke traumatic responses and work accordingly with clients who have been harmed by these systems.

I've most successfully worked in a traditional psychoanalytic setting with the people I've seen over the years, although I'm happy to see anyone open to talking and thinking about their difficulties or aspirations in psychotherapy if that's a preference or desire. I enjoy consultations even if someone doesn't decide to proceed with treatment, and as long as folks come in good faith I usually don't charge for them.

I work with people from diverse backgrounds, have extensive experience working with persons from other cultures, including East and South Asia, and a particular expertise in helping those who are negotiating the many challenges of life in a new city, a new country, and a new culture.
I offer a safe space for you to wonder aloud about yourself and the world you live in. So many problems in life become both more manageable and more meaningful as we articulate our feelings about them. And this is not something we are always given the time or space to do. My role, as a psychodynamic therapist, is to be there with you as you go about this sometimes difficult work, making new sense of your life.

I have over 35 years of experience treating self esteem, intimacy/relationship issues, anxiety, depression, sexual identity conflicts and stuttering. I work extensively with individual, couples, families and adolescents. Change or relief from symptoms occurs only when the patient feels a complete sense of trust and safety in their relationship with his/her therapist. I utilize a highly interactive, integrated approach of psychodynamic and cognitive therapy in a comfortable therapeutic setting to facilitate that sense of support and trust in a direct/honest relationship.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
