Negative experiences shape how we think about ourselves, but they don't have to define us forever. We can learn new ways of relating to ourselves and the people around us via a variety of therapeutic modalities. With a therapist who can hold space for you with compassion and wisdom, you can overcome obstacles and cultivate resilient wellbeing. I might be helpful to you if: You know what it is like to feel held back from life, but don’t know how to engage; You crave connection and community, but feel uncomfortable reaching out to others; You feel disconnected from your body – you may not recognize there is a disconnect.

I see the therapeutic process as a relationship between you and I where we begin to explore one's patterns, relationships, strengths, and challenges. In such exploration, one can find a deeper understanding of him/herself in order to move forward with a happy and productive life. My role is a partner, guide, and witness to your journey of becoming a more fulfilled you. I believe everyone is doing their best to survive and find happiness in their lives. Sometimes, our efforts can lead to maladaptive patterns. Therapy helps illuminate these patterns and guide you to develop new ones.

Are you experiencing grief and loss? After working in hospice for years I know the isolation and feeling of hopelessness that grief can bring. It is a roller coaster of ups and downs, and sometimes feels like a punch to the gut when you don’t expect it. People in your life might try to help by telling you cliches, or maybe it seems that no one understands. Are you ready to learn to honor your past while learning how to function in your daily life?

I view counseling as walking down the hallway of life and trying to close the doors to one's past. As one walks down the hallway, one must walk into each room and decide what to hold on to and what to let go of. I understands that seeking therapy can be really difficult and enjoys using humor when appropriate. I am compassionate therapist at times but can be blunt. I do not want to waste your time or money therefore I will work hard with you to come up with a treatment plan that works best. My background includes working on a National Burn unit, ICU, ER, Psychiatric hospital, and managing a residential group home.

I have become very interested in the brain's functioning powers and how people can learn to re-wire neural networks, using strategies that can calm, relax, heighten a sense of personal control, diminish the power of old patterns, and strengthen healthy neural pathways. Research now shows that talking about what is causing tension, stress, or discomfort for you is good for your brain. It is good to find a therapist, a trusted friend or clergy worker to confide in and improve your life. I work with children of all ages, adult individuals, and couples and families who are having difficulties.

I work with high-achieving people who are intelligent, prone to overthinking, and tend to be more logical than emotional. Despite the amount of energy you put into excelling at work, school, or your relationships, you might still experience overwhelming anxiety regarding whether you're doing enough, potentially causing anger or depression. Perhaps your perfectionism damaged your sense of self-worth. You’re not sure how much longer you can - or want to - keep this up. More than anything, you want to gain control over your uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.

You & I will define your intentions for therapy and create active goals to shift patterns. I have always had a strong calling to support others. I believe that people can learn to accept, love, and claim authenticity by moving away from patterns that are no longer serving the individual, by actively exploring their unique interests & evolving needs. I respect and acknowledge all relationship styles & sexual identities. My goal is to hold space.

A healthy sense of humor is just as much a bridge to another soul as it is a shield against the unbearable. My clients often laugh as much as they cry or express anger, and I think that's important in the business of healing. What do you want to heal? Is there something about your relationship with a loved one that feels uncomfortable or unsafe? Do you need a non-judgmental space to help you figure out what you want or who you are?

Are anxiety, depression, and trauma creating roadblocks in your life? Does it feel like there is a disconnect between you and the world around you? It is normal for the trauma stored in your body to create barriers to connection. Unfortunately, these barriers can be incredibly painful and difficult to cope with. You may be experiencing cycles of painful thoughts, days of numbness, or outbursts of anger.

I have worked in mental health for 22 yrs mostly in the Veterans Affairs Medical Admin at two different hospitals. I also have treated a variety of of issues, such as substance abuse (residential), PTSD, depression, anxiety, couples, relational issues. I have also taught psycho-educational classes in those areas. My approach is collaborative. I believe the client knows their story and experiences better than I do. I believe it is important to listen to understand and meet the client where they are at in their journey. Then my role is to facilitate and make sense of what the issue is that is causing one to be stuck in old habits.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Denver?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
