For the past decades, I have had the pleasure of treating and families here in the Lowcountry. I work with clients who have a variety of mood disorders (such as Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder), Anxiety Disorders (such as Panic Disorder & Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), ADHD, Physical and Sexual abuse, Developmental Disorders, Bereavement, etc. The healthcare community uses labels to diagnose, understand and treat mental disorders. However, in my practice, I strive to treat my clients as individuals and give them the respect they deserve. I pride myself on creating a safe, nurturing, therapeutic relationship with my clients.

I have and continue to successfully assist many individuals, youth and elderly, couples, and families who are courageous enough to seek professional therapeutic counseling services. In my experience, I have learned that life will inevitably bring changes. Some of which are hard to cope with and endure. These times for many produce stress, anger, anxiety depression, and other mood disorders. I utilize evidence-based practices such as ad CBT and REBT to assist my clients in navigating through and overcoming these times.

My sense of humor is big part part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. In addition to counseling, I also provide life coaching for clients who want to make changes but aren't sure where to start. I work particularly well with clients who are nervous or skeptical about the idea of counseling. I realize that therapy can be a significant expense, so I run my practice as efficiently as possible. All scheduling, forms, notes, and billing are online, so we can make the best use of our time together.

With over 16 years experience as a licensed therapist, I'm passionate about building rapport and, from this basis, providing high-quality treatment. In working with couples, I maintain a good therapeutic relationship with both clients and take a balanced approach where each partner is empowered to speak up and share in their progress. When working with anxious clients, I assist clients in defining what anxiety is and what it does so that they can recognize and challenge it as they develop new coping skills. In treating trauma, I help clients feel empowered to step into their work before starting Brainspotting or EMDR sessions.

Dr. Boland has a general psychotherapy practice treating children, adolescents and adults . He has been in private practice since 1988 and specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Behavioral Family Psychotherapy. Dr. Boland graduated Summa Cum Laude (top 2%) from the University of Northern Colorado in 1981 and received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Carolina in 1987. He completed his psychology internship at the Medical College of Georgia and his postdoctoral supervision at G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital in Columbia, SC. He is licensed in South Carolina as a clinical psychologist.

I have an unusual background for a psychotherapist. Before I started my counseling career, I worked as a TV news reporter, an online media executive, and an adjunct college professor. This diverse experience in journalism, business, and education has given me valuable skills that I use in my counseling practice. My sense of humor is another important part of my counseling style. I have been practicing as a licensed clinical psychologist in the Columbia area for over 35 years. I use a caring, and direct, solution-focused approach to help individuals and couples to better understand themselves and to help them find solutions to their difficulties. I treat individuals who experience anxiety, depression, and addictions. I treat couples who are trying to understand how their relationship deteriorated, how to resolve conflicts, how to re-establish emotional intimacy, and how to prevent future difficulties. I also conduct psychological and custody evaluations for individuals and for the court system.
