Life is Complicated! Depression, anxiety, divorce and all sorts of traumatic experiences are issues that make life difficult, messy and at times unbearable. These issues cause havoc in daily functions that results in confusion, guilt, and shame. They rob you of the happiness, and the joy that you desire to live and the purpose filled life you were created to experience. I work with those who are experiencing issues related to depression, anxiety and stress, trauma related to childhood and adult sexual abuse, divorce, grief, anger and other issues that prohibit a fulfilling life.
I believe in the innate capacity of human beings to find their own answers, and I see my role as helping to facilitate that process. I enjoy helping people to find their own strengths and develop and fine tune their own growth. My style is fundamentally humanistic, and I believe that encouragement is at the root of growth and healing. Helping clients to recognize patterns in their lives can also be beneficial. My background in rehabilitation counseling has also enabled me to work with adults and children with a wide variety of disabilities.
After many years' experience as both client and therapist, I understand that the therapist works no magic. Nothing can be delivered or injected or swallowed that works a "cure." The resources for healing are already within the client; the therapist holds a metaphorical mirror so the client can see them better. So effective work needs two things: the initiative and commitment of the client, and the skill of the therapist in holding up mirrors. Still, the relationship must "click." Unfortunately, the ingredients for this are somewhat mysterious. You are the final judge.
I work with individuals of all ages, regardless of background, gender, or race. I work specifically with individuals who present with behavioral issues, mental health problems, emotional problems, low self-esteem, anger issues, and/or phase of life problems. If your goal is to learn healthy and effective ways to understand your child's behavioral and emotional problems and decrease problems in your home and/or school environment, I can help. If your goal is to learn how to express your feelings, manage your depression and/or anxiety, address past traumatic life events, and/or overcome difficult life situations, I can help.
I have an unusual background for a psychotherapist. Before I started my counseling career, I worked as a TV news reporter, an online media executive, and an adjunct college professor. This diverse experience in journalism, business, and education has given me valuable skills that I use in my counseling practice. My sense of humor is another important part of my counseling style. I take my work with clients seriously, but there are times when therapy needs to include some humor. I also offer life coaching for clients who want to make some changes but don't know where to start.
People reaching out for professional services want respect and relief. I honor both of these. I respect that each client who comes to see me is the expert on their life and situation. I also respect that they are trusting me with their story and concerns. Yet, clients also want some relief. That is why my approach builds on the existing strengths and assets that an individual, couple, or family brings into my office so that symptom relief is quick and long term change is realistic and sustainable.

I know you're overwhelmed, at the end of your rope, and are sick of trying to keep it all held together with scotch tape and paper clips. I want to help you achieve whatever solutions and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the process as much as possible and experiencing yourself in new ways. Reaching out for help can be intimidating, but I hope you will take a moment (& a deep breath!) to contact me and see how I can help.

I am an energetic licensed clinical psychologist who is offering comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments to the growing Blythewood and Northeast communities! I use a variety of diagnostic methods to capture each individual's profile of strengths and weaknesses. I asses the person’s level of functioning, including attention, memory, learning skills, language skills, nonverbal reasoning, organizational skills and problem solving. I investigate whether the person is experiencing any emotional distress that is severe enough to meet criteria for a formal diagnosis, such as a depressive or anxiety disorder.
