You will come to recognize what’s holding you back and find new ways of identifying joy through psychoanalytic change.
Psychotherapy is ultimately about achieving a deeper understanding of the self, articulating the issues one struggles with and creating a pathway towards change. It can be a challenge to shape our futures and to find the right therapist with whom you can establish a meaningful connection. Whether you are seeking therapy as an individual or as a couple, navigating the kinds of questions keeping you up at night means finding someone you can trust. Someone with whom you can co-create a judgement-free, compassionate, empathetic landscape. I’m interested in finding out if we can build that kind of dynamic together.

Using a psychoanalytic lens, my approach is to support you as you create the space for the change you need.
Navigating life’s circumstances can be complicated and challenging. Although we must find the strength to get past the roadblocks in our lives, we don’t have to do it alone. Therapy can help us get to know ourselves so that we can find new ways to respond when the pressure of modern living becomes too much. My aim as a therapist is to partner with you on a journey of self-discovery so that you can find satisfaction and thrive. I believe therapy can help us uncover subtle beliefs and patterns that shape our daily experiences. With greater awareness, we gain the tools to enact positive change and remodel relationships.

I have 40 years experience, and am deeply committed to, treating adults between 25 and 65 years old. Men and women suffering from confusion, anxiety and depression as they struggle to realize their potential – in their professional, sexual and love life. The goal of my work with patients is to understand their personal complexity so that new and constructive patterns of living can be obtained. Most importantly, the working through process of psychoanalytic treatment leads to the development of a strong, creative self and a freeing up of one’s potential and direction going forward.

I believe that supporting an individual’s emotional well-being is the primary force for positive growth. In therapy clients can safely explore thoughts and feelings in a way that creates space to see our patterns more clearly. I value the relationship and believe it is the foundation for the working through process to happiness and uncovering a sense of purpose and meaning in life. My understanding of therapy primarily draws from psychoanalytic perspectives but I also incorporate mindfulness and contemporary views on trauma in my work. Individuals might need different approaches and I do my best to meet you where you are at.

My training is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis which means that I view the therapeutic relationship as central to the change process and that I help patients to understand that their conflicts from the past affect the way they feel and act in the present.
I have been treating patients in psychotherapy for over 35 years. Therapy offers people help towards change, change towards the life they want. Yet,for various reasons, this life has not been attainable. My approach is to offer patients a safe, supportive, understanding environment in which they can explore their hopes and fears and the obstacles that get in their way of having a fuller, richer life.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers deep empathic understanding and useful insights that can be grounding and freeing.
The enormous number of stressors we face daily are intense these days: politics, the economy, the climate, global unrest, overwork, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage on one's own. Anxiety, anger, depression, resentment, boredom; sadness, rage, exhaustion, denial. If you're struggling with any of this - or any other states that often bring people to therapy, like emptiness, grief, feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction - it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded, and find a better path forward.

You are not alone. There are other people out here going through this too. This is temporary. We will reach out to you, discuss your needs, and pair you with a therapist familiar with your needs. Together, you will meet, identify issues, collaborate to create a plan, follow through with some reasonable interventions, and figure out ways to make the changes last.

I underwent post graduate training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, completing the four year program in Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
I believe that where we came from inevitably affects who we are, but does not need to define or constrain us in perpetuity. I want to understand where you’re coming from and where you want to go. My job is to listen, to try to understand how you see the world, and help you understand what patterns may hold you back. I am warm, humorous, thoughtful and patient. Our time together is yours and nothing is out of bounds. I hope to create a safe space where we can creatively look at your life and try to understand your concerns, doubts, fears and triumphs.

I focus on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic treatments to help you uncover unresolved conflicts within yourself and within your other meaningful relationships.
"Why should I go to therapy?" I remember asking myself that same question many years ago. Deciding to go to therapy isn’t easy. It usually means that life has been challenging and that you aren't coping well. Sometimes the cause is obvious—you’ve lost someone; you’re anxious or depressed; you’re dealing with change. At other times, things are less clear. You sense that something is off, but can’t exactly point to what it is. That’s where therapy can make a significant difference. Your time in therapy is likely the only time you'll have complete freedom to say what’s running through your head—good or bad—without being judged.

I do psychoanalytic, psychodynamic oriented treatment (talk therapy).
Your decision to begin therapy is a very courageous one.Together we can explore how to improve your painful emotional life and reduce your anguish, anxiety and/or depression. Because of my background in law, I have treated many lawyers either in practice or in transition, and because of my background in art, I have experience treating a wide variety of artists. But my practice is certainly not limited to people in those areas. I welcome your call or email today. I am often in session, but will get back to you as soon as I can usually by the end of the day.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
