My main goal in a couple, family, or individual setting is to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore and address their relational challenges. I can help individuals who want to manage stress, anxiety, and depression navigate life transitions such as career changes and relationship challenges, cope with trauma and grief, enhance self-esteem/self-awareness, and address behavioral or emotional issues. As a result of the work that I do, clients often gain insight, develop coping strategies, build resilience, stop unwanted repetitive patterns, and achieve a greater sense of well-being and fulfillment.

Do you ever feel like it's your own brain that's making life so much harder? Parts of you want to practice self love and grace while other parts of you are self critical and shaming. Maybe you're experiencing unwanted thoughts or traumatic memories that scare you and make you feel out of control. Sometimes our own minds feel unsafe and full of conflict and pain. It is so hard to cope with the challenges of life while managing loud and distressing thoughts and emotions. We feel isolated, anxious, hopeless and ashamed. I want to tell you that you are not alone, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Are you are experiencing feelings of grief, a loss of meaning, or working through life changes? You might also feel lost and struggling with wounds from your past. I enjoy working with someone who is willing to be open and collaboratively explore their thoughts and feelings. You might also be curious and open to using creative, artistic ways to express yourself. In addition, while I have more experience working with older women, I love to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. strive to make the therapeutic space as welcoming and inclusive as I can.

Throughout life we encounter a myriad of experiences that shape and influence who we are. We also inherit things that shape us. Sometimes these things may overwhelm or not prepare us to problem solve as effectively as we'd like. When life is challenging or overwhelming, many times we need support to help us manage our circumstances, learn effective ways to cope and to show us how to utilize our own resources and personal strengths to thrive and survive.

Siyo (Hello in Cherokee)! My name is Tishina Carroll. I have been involved in the behavioral health field for over 15 years. A common question I get asked is “Why did you choose to become a therapist”? The answer is easy: I profoundly enjoy helping others to find ways to manage life’s challenges, while also supporting them in developing into the best versions of themselves. I too have struggled with mental health challenges, & I understand the stigma that comes with admitting that you need help. I want my clients to understand that they are not alone in their struggles.

Rewriting your life story can take many pages and much time. One of the greatest lessons is that as the author of your story you can write and rewrite as much as possible. Finding that balance and adjusting to life's role can be very challenging but you do not have to do that alone.

Are you experiencing distress and brokenness in your life? Carrying this heaviness can feel overwhelming and can overtake moments of hope and joy. We all desperately desire to be alleviated from the pain and suffering we experience. When dealing with multiple life challenges it can feel at times impossible to take one step forward. Despite our circumstances, we all have the ability to move forward one step at a time. To alleviate our distress, it might require leaning more into ourselves with the help of a therapist. I want to provide a safe haven for you to come as you are; meeting you with trust, acceptance, and empathy.

Navigating life is hard. It's often filled with unforeseen obstacles and life-altering changes. Finding answers to life's problems can leave you feeling overwhelmed, powerless, and alone. However, I can help you find and explore the answers you seek. While starting therapy and sharing your life can be scary, it is also a clear sign of strength. Restructuring thinking, creating balance, examining relationships, as well as addressing previous trauma, are all ways I assist clients in their healing journey.

Counseling can be a scary process. And sometimes the process of change is so uncomfortable, it's easier to ignore it or avoid it. That just makes you human! Whether you have been experiencing unwanted thoughts, mood swings, major changes, or maybe you aren't finding the same joy in things that you typically love- therapy provides a time for you to set goals for your future or maybe provide meaning and offer peace about the past. I have a passion for working with adolescents, young adults, and adults as you navigate the challenges in developing your identity, nourishing relationships, and adjusting to life transitions.

Relationships can provide the greatest joy yet create emotional pain in our lives. Anxiety, depression, shame, and trauma can be traced to a current or past relationship. Maybe you are in an unhealthy or unfulfilling relationship. Perhaps, you are experiencing a relationship loss due to a divorce or a breakup. Or you may be living with the impact of early childhood trauma/neglect. You also may be single with a longing to be in a relationship. Despite the cause of emotional pain, I believe you can heal and grow. I offer a safe environment where we work collaboratively toward a fulfilling relationship with yourself and others.

Having been counseling for over 20 years, I know that things can get out of control. We're told that we must pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and handle anything that comes our way, but we struggle to do it on our own. Many of us have been impacted by addictions, tragedy, narcissism, depression, anxiety, things under our control and things out of our control. We start to question ourselves and wonder what’s healthy even look like? I focus on helping people heal, bringing health back into their life, and then find their best path forward.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Charlotte?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
