I have worked in private practice and school settings for over 20 years, applying cognitive-behavioral principles and social-emotional skill building to support adults, teens, and tweens through symptoms of anxiety and depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, stress management, life transitions, self doubt, inflexibility, and somatic concerns.
Counseling can be a responsive process, as clients receive support and work toward an understanding of how present-day concerns may relate to past experiences. It can also be a preventive process, allowing clients to clarify and build on their own internal strengths that promote balance, wellness, and resiliency. My treatment approach is both cognitive-behavioral (focused on the links between events, thoughts, feelings, and actions) and psychoeducational (promoting the building of social and emotional skills). From a foundation of self-awareness, we can collaborate to expand your coping strategies and improve your relationships.

I am passionate about helping individuals overcome negative beliefs they may have about themselves, others, or the world, specifically after a trauma or an adverse life experience. My clinical training in CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), allows me to have a unique perspective to help individuals identify what is keeping them stuck and find ways to create a new narrative to their lives. In addition to trauma, I work with individuals with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, low self-esteem, addictions, ADHD, and relationship concerns.

As an individual who has anxiety and depression, I am hopeful I could be someone you feel comfortable talking with and try to build healthy coping skills with.
Living with anxiety, depression, unregulated emotions can make life seem 10x harder. Things such as work, household chores, or even self care can seem overwhelming and relationships can take up energy. But there is HOPE.

My approach to therapy is rooted in joy, and appreciation for the vibrancy of each person I treat. When stress, anxiety, depression, history of trauma, or complicated relationship or family dynamics impact our daily lives, it can be challenging to have self-compassion, find solutions, or ask for help. With consistent treatment, many clients see a decrease in severity of symptoms, improved ease in managing stressful situations, and an increase in self-esteem and quality of relationships.

When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, hoping they can help you feel better. Problems like depression, anxiety, impulsivity, uncontrollable anger, guilt, or low self-confidence can be as painful, if not more so, than physical illness; they can also create serious relationship and work difficulties. I have over 25 years of experience and I have helped many adults, adolescents, and couples who had received limited or no benefit from previous therapists, other doctors, or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy.

I take a basic trauma approach. Often early in life, circumstances overwhelm us. We can feel unseen and misunderstood or as if we have to perform in order to be loved and accepted. When these situations are chronic, we naturally develop automatic responses to try and solve the problem. These responses arise again and again in adulthood without our bidding, creating varying degrees of anxiety and depression which negatively impact our relationships, careers, and ambitions. The good news is the system wants to find a way to heal itself. That’s what brought you here. It is my goal to help you realize your innate perfection.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
