Whether your child or adolescent is displaying attentional challenges, on the autism spectrum, or just has their own special way of learning, I’m here to work collaboratively with you to help you gain clarity and unlock your child's full potential.
Your child may not be exactly in sync with the world around them, facing challenges like Olympic-level fidgeting or having challenges socially or academically. They may feel frustrated, isolated, and misunderstood, with their behavior being challenging and intense in how they relate to others. Such behaviors can create a rollercoaster of emotions, not just for them but also for you as their parent. As they navigate the ups and downs of their social and academic world, it can become downright overwhelming. These behaviors are not fleeting phases; it's their way of saying, 'Houston, we have a problem.'

I work with individuals, couples and families providing child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy.
Good psychotherapy requires a "match" between client(s) and therapist and avoids "stretching the client to fit the couch." Finding the right psychotherapist involves both clinical skill and personality match. A good therapist is genuine, warm, and offers a human relationship with active listening, guidance, and good advice. As a Marriage & Family Therapist, what I offer as a clinician is an active style of psychotherapy with a high regard for where you are in your journey, what your goals are, and what things can be pointed out and changed along the path to growth and improved relationships.

Families come to me because their child or adolescent is struggling, and often times they don’t know where to begin to make things better. I work with children, teens, their parents, and young adults (up to age 25). I initially focus on learning about a person's challenges and strengths. Then, together we develop a plan for gaining mastery over difficulties, achieving goals, and ultimately reaching a child, teen, or early adult's potential. Often challenges feel overwhelming when first seeking help, but most families find initial sessions to clarify goals while also setting the stage for long-sought change.

I love to help clients identify and break harmful patterns of behavior and work towards a healthier, more sustainable, balance that improves their lives. My style is compassionate, yet direct and transparent. I see problematic behaviors as coping mechanisms for underlying stressors/emotional experiences that need processing. I have extensive experience working with clients with eating disorders and addictions. As a former HS teacher, I enjoy working with young adults. I believe that relationships heal. In every case, I consider clients' contexts, which have great impact on their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Mindfulness practice is built-in to my approach.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
