I have 20+ years combined experience working in private practice, inpatient child and adolescent eating disorders treatment, inpatient adult psychiatric treatment, community mental health, and child forensic interviewing.
I value and enjoy working with clients of all ages. Primary areas of focus are: coping with life transitions, helping clients to have more satisfying relationships, working with parents to support attachment goals for healthy development of their child, and sitting with the grief that our inevitable losses bring. I specialize in working with clients with eating disorders, trauma and PTSD, and anxiety disorders. My approach is integrative, drawing from effective treatments (DBT, CBT, attachment-based) to meet your particular needs. I provide short-term and long-term services to individuals and families.

Finding the right therapist for you or your teen is critical.
Being autistic means existing in a sometimes perplexing and frustrating world that largely caters much more to the neurotypical brain. Over time this can manifest in a host of issues, ranging from depression and anxiety to social isolation and loneliness. The good news is that your brain possesses hidden strengths and abilities that can more than make up for these supposed deficits. To this end, I use creative approaches to draw these skills out and teach my clients how to apply their strengths in the areas where they are struggling.

With over 30 years of experience, I subscribe to a solution-focus philosophy, in which I strive to address the problem as quickly as possible, but with enough depth to avoid relapse. I set goals early in treatment with adults and couples, or with children/teenagers and their families, so we can find successful solutions and change behavior problems, emotional difficulties, academic difficulties, or family problems as soon as possible. I love people and people's stories, and am always truly and deeply interested in the story of every child, teen , and adult I meet. I also think laughter is therapeutic and therapy can be fun.

I am passionate about walking alongside and empowering children, adolescents, and caregivers through therapy and assessment services. Life with children is full of new, constantly changing chapters. Challenging chapters may include learning your child has specific learning or behavioral needs, feeling concerned for a child or teen that is withdrawn, navigating your child’s adoption narrative with them, or providing a safe space for your child to process trauma, to name a few. Treatment specialties include parent-child relationships, identity development, trauma work, adoption, school and behavior problems, mood disorders and ADHD.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
