My approach is rooted in therapies such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Brainspotting, and Somatic Experiencing to address racial issues, complex trauma and PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
You're carrying the weight of navigating a world that often feels like it wasn't built for you. It can be brutal, the constant feeling of being on edge, the unseen barriers you face daily, and the overwhelming expectation to fit the “mold”. You're not alone. I'm here to help you heal, reclaim your life, and thrive! I understand that navigating these challenges can be incredibly difficult and that they can leave deep emotional scars. As a therapist working with individuals facing these issues, I deeply understand how these challenges can manifest and uniquely impact your life, and I recognize the interconnectedness between them.

Many of my clients come to therapy because they don't feel confident, safe, or at peace in themselves, how they connect with others, or how they fit in the world. These areas are at the core of who you are and how you interact in the world. At times, it may be difficult to move forward and you may feel stuck. You may feel disconnected, unfulfilled, or overwhelmed. This can affect relationships, work, and your sense of self. It can be difficult to find your way back to yourself and the life you want to build. I'm passionate about helping people navigate this journey. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, life transitions and identity.

My areas of research and special clinical interest include marriage and health, research informed clinical practice, couple therapy, trauma, sex therapy, parenting issues, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
My private practice is different than most therapy practices. First, my personal practice is small. My role as President of The Briggs Institute, Inc. allows me to limit my caseload size. This assures that my clients receive the attention they deserve. Second, my experience in academia places me at the forefront of the field of marriage and family therapy. This means that my practice is informed by scientific research that most private practice therapists can't easily access.

Your worries, fears, and self-doubt will always be met with compassion and empathy.
I work with women who are considering or approaching major life transitions or milestones. Women who are smart and ambitious and tend towards perfectionism which leaves them questioning themselves and experiencing stress and worry. Women who are entering a new decade, deciding to switch careers, contemplating marriage and/or parenthood, all the while navigating daily stressors and everyday lives. I work with women who are looking to be kinder to themselves and figure out what they really want.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
