Good psychologists devote ample time to listening to and helping their clients. No one should have to feel like they are making an elevator pitch when they see their therapist. I offer longer sessions which allow for deeper discussions and help that is personalized to your lived experience, strengths, and culture. My approach is calming, caring, insightful, and creative, and I'm also trained to discuss topics that some psychologists don't have the comfort or cultural knowledge to address. Together, let's start building a way forward free from struggle with negative emotions and towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life!

I am currently running a wait list... My ideal client doesn't exist because EVERYONE deserves competent, compassionate, culturally appropriate, accessible mental health care. You are my ideal candidate because you are human. I want to spend our time together helping you creating the space to share your story in your voice. We can talk about death, love, depression, anxiety, suicide, and gender. Or anything else that’s causing you to feel stuck. I particularly love working with 2SLGBTQIA+ adults, couples, and others who face marginalization in their day to day lives. I value collaboration, commitment, humour, joy and love.

I work with clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, interpersonal/relationship difficulties, adjustment issues, personality disorders, and struggles with meaning, self-actualization, and career. I focus on helping clients better understand how past experiences, avoided emotions, and interpersonal patterns may be contributing to and maintaining their distress and suffering. Through building awareness in the context of a non-judgmental and unconditionally accepting therapeutic relationship, clients are able to develop more flexible and adaptive ways of coping, learn new ways of relating to others in their lives, develop skills, and experience deeper connection, acceptance, and respect for themselves and their emotions.

Life can be overwhelming at times, leading to feelings of disconnection and despair. Through connection, I believe healing occurs, as you are able to feel truly seen, heard and understood by another person. I strive to create a safe, trusting relationship where you feel comfortable to explore your inner world and work through the thoughts, beliefs, patterns and unhealed wounds that may be affecting you. As the expert of your experiences, you bring inherent knowledge of what is needed for you to grow and heal. I enjoy working with clients of all backgrounds, and who present with a variety of psychological concerns. However, I'm most enthusiastic about working with folks who are undergoing significant life change, or who feel that a major change might be necessary. I'm also a keen supporter of mental wellbeing in veterans and first responders, expatriates and immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I see clients either online, or in person via the Safe Haven Counselling clinic in northwest Calgary (www.safehavencounselling.org).

Hi, I'm glad you're here. I'm Whitney, and I'm a Registered Psychologist. I work with both adults and couples on a range of concerns. No matter who I am working with, I am guided by the following values: honesty, curiosity, and fun. In therapy, this means that I'm straightforward, I seek feedback from clients to ensure therapy is meeting their needs and adapt the process when needed. I also take the opportunity to use creativity and humour to enhance therapy.

I am a Registered Psychologist and have been supporting clients for over 12 years in their pursuits of living more healthy and fulfilling lives. I predominately work with clients that have experienced trauma, in addition to other concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and stress. I believe that trauma involves feeling or experiencing a profound lack of safety. For that reason, I strive to create a warm, compassionate, and trusting space that allows for all of life's challenges to be addressed in a way that feels as safe as possible.

I am a Registered Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree, specialization in Clinical Social Work. My primary area of focus is divorce and separation, working with the entire family, children (over 12) and individuals going through this big family change. I work with families in the Collaborative Family Law Process, voluntary process, or with those under court-ordered interventions. I believe in early intervention with families going through this difficult time prior to conflict escalating, however if conflict is set in then a direct, solution-focused approach is key.

How can I find a therapist in T5R?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
