Life transitions, daily stressors, trauma, and mental illnesses can negatively influence the way we think, feel, and behave. These factors can cause us to feel "stuck" in old habits and patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that no longer serve us. I recognize that when we are stuck, it is difficult to make that first step towards change and reach out for support. Hence, I acknowledge you for making the first step into finding what works best for you. I understand that you want to take charge of your mental and emotional pain so that you can unlock your utmost potential.

'Life is pain, highness. Anyone who tells you differently is selling something'- William Goldman (from The Princess Bride). All sarcasm aside, life can be painful. Not being okay can be scary, especially if no one in your support system feels comfortable talking about emotions or mental health. If you're looking for someone to talk to, you've probably gotten to the place where seeking help is less scary than staying where you are right now. I've been there. Asking for help goes against what Western society tells us: that we should be able to figure it all out on our own while also being productive. No wonder we don't like feelings.

At Wholeness Psychology Centre, we work with a variety of concerns, including trauma, depression, anxiety, addictions, identity crisis, and relationship conflict. We recognize that short-term, solution-focused modalities are appropriate for some presenting concerns. For others, a more heart-centred, holistic, depth-oriented approach to therapy is necessary. Our team has the skills and training in both areas to best meet your therapeutic needs and goals. Our approach is multifaceted and involves working with several layers simultaneously and getting to the core of your experience and needs in assessments and counselling.

Accepting new clients! Living with chronic illness, disability, or neurodivergence is hard. Getting through the overwhelm of everyday life feels impossible. You're starting to feel like all you think about is your condition and everything it has taken away from you - work, hobbies, sleep, relationships. Your family and friends don’t get it. They try to help and probably mean well, but sometimes the dismissive way they say things makes you feel worse. You try to hide your symptoms to seem “normal” but inside, you feel like you might break.

Accepting clients - Do you overthink and judge everything you say? Are you reliving past or future events and feel stuck in worry and stress? Or, are you wanting to break family cycles and heal patterns? I support women as they reclaim their lives before the hurt — before the assault, eating disorder, or toxic relationship. Before anxiety and fear settled in. For many of my clients, unsupportive relationships have been their norm, and they identify with having absent, abusive, or emotionally unavailable parents and partners. Therapy can help you get to know yourself better, regain a sense of self and agency, and heal from the past.

As human beings, we strive to have healthy connections with others and ourselves. Yet sometimes those connections get lost, fuzzy or disjointed along the way. Secure attachments are a basic human need. I have more than 9 years of experience working in the US and Canada as a Masters-level counsellor. I've worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings. These experiences have given me a diverse perspective into what we face as people who are perfectly imperfect. With your permission, I will gladly walk with you on the path to reconnection and self-discovery.

Any client is ideal, anyone who needs help is more than welcome to ask for it. I would listen to anyone, and then let them know if I have the expertise to help or not. That’s one main reason that my first session is always FREE. We not only talk about their issues and goals, but also about their strengths and capabilities. Life is not only about what’s going wrong, it’s good to see things that are going well. I work with individuals, couples and also families. Clients mostly come with personal, interpersonal, relationship, skill deficit, life change, trauma, and mood issues to seek help.

It can be difficult to go to counselling, particularly for the first time. Finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with is an important, and at times challenging, process. You likely want someone that can give you direction or tools, but also you connect with and feel supported by. I too feel this is important and strive to provide you with an experience that is both warm / caring AND competent/ knowledgeable. For many years I have worked with individual's and couple's concerns in this manner. I specialize in helping individuals or couples move forward, heal their pain, feel happier and find more peace.

Are you a "big feeler"? Have you always been considered emotional or sensitive? Big feelers are often filled with worries about the future and overwhelmed by the present. You might spend a lot of time dealing with racing thoughts and fears. It's difficult to feel like you're living a secret life where no one knows how much you struggle. You might even feel like no one really knows you. You might wish you could just turn your brain off for a while and not feel so deeply impacted by everything.

How can I find a therapist in Alberta?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
