Hi, thanks for visiting! I'm Dave and my practice is Choosing Joy LLC. I chose this name because I deeply believe that, beyond mere symptom management, lasting healing and change really are possible to each of us. I am committed to helping clients do more than merely manage symptoms; I help them accurately identify and move beyond obstacles -- on to abundant, joyful living. I provide real, lasting help for depression and anxiety, for sexual, media, and other behavioral addictions, for adult Attention-Deficit Disorder, and for unresolved traumas.

Trying to heal can be a lonely and hidden journey. Why open up if you will be judged or condemned? Seventeen years ago, I met a therapist who didn’t judge, and I knew he genuinely cared. I felt it! His genuine compassion, despite my flaws, made me realize healing is possible! From that point on, healing became my passion; it felt contagious. Helping others feel safe, heard, understood, and non-judged. Caused me to change my business career after getting my MBA, to get a 2nd Masters in Marriage & Family Therapy.

Therapy is: Creating desired changes which improve our lives. My goal is to help identify the obstacles which are impeding your happiness and assist you in making changes that will bring a greater level of joy and fulfillment to your life. People enjoy my warm, easy going, supportive nature as they work through life's struggles. Clients progress as they overcome fears, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, addictions, relationship problems, old/new emotional wounds. Success in treatment comes as the barriers to my client's "desired life" fall, one by one, and they become independently prepared for new functioning in life.

Things have felt "off" for a while. While part of you wants to withdraw, the other part wants to yell. None of this was part of the plan. The excitement, laughter, and connection you once felt are replaced with the complications and stress of life. It seems like any attempt to make changes just prove to make things worse. Any decision feels like the wrong decision. The fear, anxiety, disconnection, resentment, and frustration are overpowering. You're stuck; uncertain about what to do next, and deeply in need of guidance. I provide a safe and non-judgmental space, to be honest with yourself and your partner.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas but relocated to Utah with my wife in 2014. I have spent most of my career as a business consultant and enjoy helping others simplify complex issues. After my own struggles, I realized that these skills could easily be transferred to individuals who had challenges in their personal lives. I am drawn to working with others who are overwhelmed by all the demands life places on them.

I work well with people who feel they need help becoming clear about what they personally think, feel, and believe. Often, this manifests as depression, anxiety, or addictive patterns, all of which stand in the way of a person experiencing their own potential, and maintaining fulfilling relationships. The therapy I offer is helpful for those interested in gaining clearer perspectives on their own underlying patterns that contribute to recurring emotional and relational pain. And from there, collaborating to create practical ways forward towards transformation.

I am accepting new clients and offer Online Counseling via Telehealth. I've provided over 10,000 hours of therapy and like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life." I managed LDS Family Services for 13 years and loved directing the 12-step Addiction Recovery Program in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. I've been recruited by multiple residential treatment centers, a hospital, a skilled nursing facility, and by an IOP program assessing and treating substance abuse and domestic violence.

I love helping people! It doesn't matter if you are coming in as a couple, individual or a family - I want to help you navigate: anxiety, depression, conflict, boundaries, spirituality, sexual abuse, men’s issues, self esteem, and emotional regulation. I especially enjoy utilizing my therapy dog or equine helpers (horses) in the therapeutic process. When I am not doing therapy, I am working with my hands with either wood or metal. I like welding, blade smithing, and working with leather. I also am a vocalist and play several instruments in my spare time to relax.

Dr. Spencer is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), an AAMFT approved supervisor and an owner and clinical director of Zest for Life Counseling. He has more than a decade of experience working with individuals, couples and families. Dr. Spencer utilizes evidenced based practices and specializes in working with trauma, grief, and couples on the brink of divorce. Dr. Spencer completed a Bachelors degree in Family Studies from Weber State University, a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Oklahoma State University, and a Doctorate in Human Development and Family Science also from Oklahoma State University.
