Marriage & relationship challenges, depression & anxiety are core areas that impact life on wide scales – these difficulties can also be a normal part of the human experience & can lead us to gain skills and make changes that will get us closer to the life we really want - a life along “the road less traveled”.
Do you often feel unheard, under-appreciated, and misunderstood in your relationship? Are you and your partner having difficulty communicating, and you feel more like roommates than partners. Maybe you or your partner are dealing with depression or anxiety, and this impacts your relationship and satisfaction with life. If you find conversations with your partner don’t go as planned and would like a professional voice & guide – I’d be glad to serve & support you. Together we will develop communication skills and habits that bring relational closeness and contentment.

Hello! I'm happy you're reading my profile since there are many profiles on this website. You might ask, "How am I different from other therapists?" Well, for starters, I am a man (I can't believe how many female therapists there are on Cleveland's west side!). My chief strength is helping adults, adolescents, and children who are struggling with depression and anxiety. I have been told by my clients they feel comfortable talking with me. Some of them have described me as calm and serene (My friends would laugh at this. Outside of therapy, I can be intense and anything but serene.)

I work with teens and adults and specialize in depression, anxiety, trauma, and identity issues.
I understand the exhaustion and hopelessness. The gut-punching anxiety that hits out of the blue. I know what it is like to feel lost and trapped at the same time. I decided to become a therapist after a successful academic career as a philosophy professor. I made the career change after facing and overcoming my own mental health challenges with the help of a therapist. The experience was so liberating that I wanted to share it with others.

Is your child becoming more depressed, anxious or defiant, spending way too much time on devices? Are you experiencing more anxiety, depression, or confusion about where you are at this point in your life and where to go from here? Are you a creative person? As individuals, we can struggle to strike a balance between our careers, our hobbies and interests, and our relationships with our partners and children. You may feel life is getting more difficult. I have extensive experience working with children, teenagers and with artistic people to follow their passions, stay realistic and not let a mental health disorder hinder them.

Experiencing the weight of intense emotions like depression or anxiety is common. There might be a perceived insurmountable distance between yourself and your loved ones. Dissatisfaction with relationships involving parents, children, or significant others is not uncommon. It can sometimes feel like nobody truly comprehends what you're going through. Whether dealing with family or relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, trauma, or other life stressors, therapy can be a pivotal step toward healing.

Much of my work is with people who are struggling with serious issues, like depression, grief, anxiety, and anger.
In our initial meeting, I try to understand whether I can be helpful, and if my skills fit your issues. I generally work towards appreciating the complicated nature of problems and the suffering that results. I may push you to develop some different ways of looking at--and solving-- your problems. As I get older I find that I'm more understanding and less quick to make judgments. I try to be what I value in a therapist--someone who has a good sense of the sorrows, joys and absurdities of life, and who still has a sense of hope.

I work with individuals as well as couples who struggle with depression, anxiety, and interpersonal relationships.
Do you find it difficult to deal with life transitions and change? Life has its unique challenges as we navigate through the different stages. Sometimes, we need support through these stages while dealing with the ongoing changes in our personal universe. Although change is difficult to handle at times, I feel that change promotes personal growth, perseverance, and inner strength. When dealt with appropriately, change can be a healthy part of life.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
