Are you struggling with anorexia, bulimia or compulsive over-eating? I have 20 years experience including time directing an adolescent inpatient program and treat both male and female patients.
If something doesn't feel quite right in your life, in how you're handling important relationships, how you're coping with feelings, or how you're progressing with goals; if you feel there are parts of yourself you don't fully understand, and you ready for this to change, then we'll be a good match. I believe psychotherapy requires working together to build understanding and accomplish change. For this, a strong patient-therapist relationship is essential; I am active, involved, responsive, open and communicative. Patients feel they know me, and they experience me as committed to knowing them.

My background includes helping with eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief and loss.
I utilize an array of approaches and offer tools that can help address current concerns. Additionally, this allows for us to explore the roots of life's challenges. I see our relationship as a dyad of mutual trust that serves as the vessel for our work. Using an attachment framework, informed by my fellowship at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy + Psychoanalysis (ICP+P), I hope to bring a sense of safety, connection, compassion, and acceptance. At your pace, we can direct our focus to integrate mind-body techniques. This is to offer relief and learn more about yourself.

I have several years of experience in body image and eating disorders recovery, behavioral addiction recovery, grief, and family system interaction.
I believe counseling should focus on supporting the client in building a life worth living. Only you know what life "fits" you best, but it is helpful to have someone along for that journey, to point out lessons along the way! My goal is to help you identify what in your life keeps you stuck, what roles and values fulfill you, and to minimize the former while maximizing the latter. What kind of life "fits" you? Let's find out! "The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases." -Carl Jung. www.invisiblethreadcounseling.com

"Fear lives in the head. And courage lives in the heart. The job is to get from one to the other" - Louis Penny. It is inevitable that we will be wounded during the journey of life. Many of those wounds generally heal on their own. However some wounds cut deeper. They are unable to heal themselves and leave scars causing broken relationships, anxiety, addiction, insecurity, fear, and pain. Facing these wounds can be frightening and overwhelming, especially when facing them alone. Together we find the courage and strength to face and heal these wounds.

Oftentimes we find ourselves struggling to break from long-standing patterns that force us to be rigid in the ways we relate to the world around us and the world within in us. These patterns, which seek consistent expression in our daily lives inhibit us from experiencing true presence during the most precious moments of our existence while hindering our pursuit of success. I work with individuals, couples, and families who seek to free themselves from these damaging patterns so that a more flexible, authentic way of relating to the world can emerge.

Among the greates influences upon our lives are the relationships we have with our spouses, partners and families. It is not unusual for us to experience problems within these relationships as we move through our lives. There are a number of reasons and circumstances which can give rise to marital, couple and family problems. Some of these are: communication problems, changes within the family, individual problems, adolescent problems, marital discord, parental discord, mental health issues, stepfamily relationships and a specific stage in family life.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
