A warm, relational approach is the foundation of my work with children, young people and their parents. As an Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, I aim to enable each person to communicate and feel understood from the depth of their experience. This means finding each person's unique ways of expressing themselves, and tailoring my technique to meet them "where they're at". I create a safe space so that children and young people are able to bring their most painful feelings and thoughts out into the room with me. At the same time, humour and fun are important elements of my work.

I am a relationship-focused therapist working with couples, individuals, and parents. By understanding our attachment style and gaining insight into how we offer and receive connection, we can grow and form meaningful relationships with our beloveds. At the heart of my couples therapy work is IMAGO Relationship therapy. Imago Relationship Therapy helps couples to identify their core needs and triggers and to communicate them to their partner in a non-confrontational and constructive way. I also integrate Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy (RLT).

I work within an integrative framework, based on the relational paradigm.
Raising awareness, developing personal growth, and release from suffering are core to my therapeutic approach. In doing so, I provide an empathic, non-judgmental, confidential space for clients where they can share their thoughts and feelings. The safe environment which I create gives an opportunity to my clients to explore difficult areas and painful experiences. I am also focused on linking the past and present, in order to increase the client’s awareness of how their childhood experiences contributed to shaping their adulthood, and how it manifests itself in the present moment.

A focus on psychodynamic, relational and developmental theory enables me to strive for a safe and empathic place.
People generally look for a counsellor because they feel stuck or unable to move forward from unhelpful thoughts and behaviour patterns. You could struggle to connect with others and maintain healthy relationships. You may also feel like you can’t keep up with the people around you; as though everyone is doing better than you are. Self-acceptance and self-worth may be a problem, especially if you are suffering from anxiety and depression. Do you want to move forward and build yourself a sustainable future?

My approach is Jungian inspired and attachment based, recognising the vital importance of our earliest relational experiences on how we are today.
For individuals and couples, I bring compassionate, open enquiry to help make sense of the challenges you face, supporting you to find authentic pathways through life's difficult terrain. I work creatively, within an agile framework, that enables you to safely explore and find meaning in your individual needs, experience and relationships. We all find ourselves feeling isolated, stuck, maybe blinded by repetitive patterns or crisis at some time - by recognising this as the time to ask for help, you allow your healing journey to begin. A journey towards a greater sense of connection, integration and wholeness.

My work often focuses on helping people who find themselves stuck in unhelpful patterns of behaviour and who are struggling with relational issues.
We seek psychological help for many reasons. Not only can psychological therapy help when life feels intolerably difficult, but it can also make an “ok” life more fulfilling. Therapy can help to reduce emotional suffering, support change, and promote personal growth. It is a collaborative process and the insight gained can help us look at life from a different perspective and enable us to respond differently to life’s challenges. People often seek support when they are facing life transitions or feel stuck in their lives.

You may be struggling at the moment with relationships or life in general. Perhaps you feel confused about yourself and the other - unsure about whether you are being reasonable or whether it is ok to feel upset or angry. You may put on a mask when dealing with others, terrified of being seen as your authentic self. Perhaps you like people but find them draining after a while. Or you may have experienced abuse, verbal abuse, or bullying in either your family of origin, your workplace or your romantic relationships. Or you may just have a hunch that something's not right or feel that there is something wrong with you.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
