Both EMDR and somatic techniques are designed to target, reroute, or grow those neurons and release the stored energy allowing you to obtain or let go of the behaviors and thoughts.
I am an affirming Boise-local therapist who focuses on Polyvagal Theory and EMDR for the treatment of anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD, somatic complaints (ulcers), and other mental health responses for adults, teens, and LGBTQIA+ peoples. I also enjoy mindfulness practices, acceptance practices, and consider my approach as a wholistic neurological approach.

I utilize both talk therapies and somatic practices as I believe in the mind/body/spirit connection.
I was originally trained as a generalist therapist. This means I am able to work efficiently with a wide range of clients. My specialty is with those who have faced identity based trauma. Identity based trauma includes experiencing trauma on the basis of being in a marginalized community such as race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.. I also specialize in workplace fatigue/stress. I acknowledge our society encourages a growing list of demands with little compensation or value to care/rest. I help these individuals find a balance in their routine.

Some of those modalities include EMDR, somatic movement, parts work, and ACT.
Are you looking for counseling that honors your spirituality? Do you want to reconnect with your authentic, true self? Do you have this sense there is supposed to be "more"? It is so easy to forget what we come into the world inherently knowing - that we all deserve to be seen, to be heard, and know that we matter. In our work together, we will venture on a journey of remembering who you truly are and unlearning all that you are not. By working with all pieces of you – mind, body, and spirit - we will break down what has built up over time that is no longer serving you and reconnect with the truth underneath.

I am an LCPC and RN. My therapy approach focuses on the body. The school of thought I practice from believes that when first faced with an overwhelming event, if unresolved, our body can hold onto the sensations of that initial reaction. A similar threat can recreate those physical sensations. Your body will then influence your emotions and beliefs as if you were back in that original moment. It's those times when your mind is telling you one thing, but your body is telling you something very different; I feel nervous but I don't know why. Somatic techniques can help link these making room for new insights and resolve.

Welcome. I am your body positive, fat liberation, feminist therapist. I work best with binge eating, bulimia, and body image disorders. Disordered eating patterns are exhausting, and eventually create a disconnect from the body you inhabit. Your body is the greatest resource you have! I work from mostly somatic lenses, and the goal of somatic therapy is to reconnect back to yourself. Examples of somatic therapy is being asked questions such as, "What color is your anxiety?" or "What does your body need to feel safe right now?" Your body will talk to you; I will help you hear what it has to say.

As a long time practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu acupressure and Somatic Experiencing practitioner (in training), I value the mind-body connection.
Waitlist for new clients. My approach to counseling is strengths based, somatic and existential. This means I believe the primary resource in the process is you. I value your experiences and innate desire to create a meaningful life. That said, this being human thing is hard sometimes! We may find ourselves in patterns misaligned with how we intend to navigate our lives. Perhaps you want a greater understanding of yourself or want to work with (not against) your amazing, complex nervous system. I come from a holistic approach and believe knowing ourselves fully is important.

My approach is integrative and holistic, blending mindfulness, CBT, EMDR therapy, and somatic (body) awareness to help you feel empowered and feel hope.
Symptoms of depression, anxiety or trauma can feel like they define you. Maybe you've tried therapy in the past without feeling much progress. Or maybe you are a new mom who feels like you are "going crazy" and are worried you will never feel like yourself again. You may find yourself in a continual state of overwhelm, wondering how to find any balance. I know what it's like to feel stuck and unsure that you can get better. Whatever has brought you here, know that you will be welcomed and seen for who you are. And...that you hold within the power of choice to try something different- to move out of what is no longer serving you.

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
