My theoretical approach is primarily based in Cognitive Behavioral Methods. I assist my clients in problem solving by looking at contradictions/errors in thinking patterns and/or behaviors and help them facilitate change through expressed areas of internal conflict and/or discomfort. I am also a solution-focused therapist and will take an eclectic approach in the use of counseling techniques in order to reach the client’s desired outcomes. I also believe that a client’s personal spiritual health is vital to overall well-being and when appropriate I will assist the client in utilizing their spiritual supports.

One of my favorite sayings "We cannot see things as-THEY-are , for we are compelled by nature to see things as-WE-are." Our past, good and bad, shape how we perceive the world. Understanding why we act; gives us ability to change. Relationships are like stories playing out our past experiences, especially in tough times. Many get stuck in repeating past patterns, lacking conflict resolution skills. Conflict isn't bad; it's how you handle it. Navigating conflicts leads to more trusting, intimate, safe, fun, and fulfilling relationships. Conflict managed well, deepens understanding and strengthens our connections. Were you taught how?

Immediate openings, no waitlist. Everyone experiences periods of challenge in life. it's natural to feel stuck. Many also live with added mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, addiction, loss/grief & more. When wrestling with these challenges, it often leaves a sense of disconnectedness. It can interfere with important relationships, & it can block us from successfully pursuing important goals. This disconnectedness can lead to existential voids & unpleasant or frightening thoughts. Yet proven evidence-based treatments for this phenomenon exist.

Maybe you're tired of suffering from being bossed around by OCD or anxiety. Perhaps you’re in a painful life transition and feeling uncertain, afraid, or lost. I’m glad you’re here. If you feel hopeless, I believe things can get much better, one step at a time. Although it sure can feel this way, rather than viewing OCD or anxiety as a monster trying to torture us, I see it as a hypervigilant alert system whose aim is to keep us safe at all costs. Retraining that alert system can help us get unstuck, heal, and thrive. I never claim to have the answers for anyone’s life, but I love helping people find answers within themselves.

Hi! I'm Emily, and I specialize in working with queer, and neurodivergent teens and adults. I am a runner, a new-ish parent to two littles, and a gummy worm enthusiast. I am a white, plus-size ADHD-er, and I like She/Her pronouns. Counseling can be intimidating, awkward, and weird - I've found that leaning into that and exploring the ways to meet sensory needs (and other needs) to be supportive for the clients I work with. My office hours are 10am-3pm.

My clients are motivated, wellness literate, and soulful. They are searching for something different, potent, exploratory. Many of my clients are looking to understand life, and themselves, on a deeper level, and traditional counseling often still leaves them searching for that extra..."something". That something is depth, immersive experience, and soulful living. I am well suited for clients who want to learn to find play in their lives, explore holistic practices in a modern way, and who wish to find a deeper satisfaction in their lives.

A psychiatrist with whom I work has described my therapeutic style as "artistic". Mine is not a sing-songy, head weaving, "how does that make you feel?" therapeutic approach. Rather, I respect the fact that my patients are presenting problems that necessitated their appointment. Problems have solutions. This is important work. I believe therapy should be an active process. My sessions are almost always active and highly engaging. This is the work of solution discovery. I believe people have their own answers. These answers reside within them. We actively and collaboratively seek these answers. Arthur Hamblin, Psy.D.

Feeling like you’re surviving instead of living? Keep finding yourself in a similar spot? Feel stuck? Being human can be difficult & messy. Our families, friends & environments aren’t always what we’d choose, & in trying to navigate what we are dealt our minds have many natural tendencies that can unintentionally contribute to our suffering. Yet we also have the potential to teach the mind other ways of doing/ being & help it help us move towards the lives we most want to live. Together we can learn how to connect to that power & work WITH the complex aspects of our humanity to create more space for enjoyment & meaning, fun & ease.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
