Hi there! I am Sunny, and I am an EMDR certified therapist. I am accepting new clients for Telehealth sessions via phone or video. I know that anxiousness can be a part of starting therapy, and reaching out for support can be the greatest hurdle to getting connected. I offer a space that is welcoming, inclusive, affirming, and dedicated to seeing you as human, not as flawed. I am best reached via email, as I can respond more quickly to requests for counseling. My wheelhouse incorporates neurodivergence, trauma, depression, and anxiety. I am also an ally of the LGTBQIA+ community, and I value the narratives of all walks of life.

Many of my clients come to me with emotional wounds. They often felt invisible, rejected, devalued, or deeply hurt by others. They learned to adapt to the unsupportive environment by judging themselves, tensing up, trying to control everything, disconnecting from themselves, numbing their feelings, not trusting others, hiding, or trying to please everyone. As time goes by, these strategies stop working and become symptoms we label as depression, anxiety, disordered eating, substance use, PTSD, self-harm, etc. I work with clients to break free from the past and live life in the way they want.

I utilize a variety of modalities, including cognitive behavioral, EMDR, psychodynamic, humanistic, solution-focused, and trauma-informed, in order to provide a safe place for those struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, self-worth, grief and loss, conflict and relationship struggles, personal growth, and other mental health issues.
I genuinely believe freedom, health, wholeness, and hope are God-given possibilities for everyone. Unfortunately, these freedoms have been lost due to traumas, life patterns, and circumstances, and the human heart desperately seeks to regain them. With the right support, clients can pull on their resilient strengths to make responsible choices to function in a healthier life-sustaining way. Counseling and psychotherapy can assist in the understanding and healing process. It is a privilege to help restore to the individual what life events, relationships, or our own choices have stolen from us.

I specialize in working with adults and couples on whatever makes their relationships difficult: trauma, self-esteem, attachment styles.
The impact of painful past experiences, relationship problems, and never feeling "good enough" are interfering with your life. You feel broken and like you have to constantly wear a mask so others don’t see you’re struggling. Disconnection and hurt are your norm in many of your relationships. You’ve read self-help books and been to therapy before, but nothing has actually led to the growth and change you’re looking for in your life and relationships. You have a sense that you can have a life with more confidence, stability, and fulfilling relationships, and are thinking it’s time you get some support.

We all experience times in our life when additional support could be helpful. Unfortunately, during these times seeking support can feel overwhelming and vulnerable. I realize it can take a great deal of courage and trust to reach out. As a therapist, I have deep respect for the people that I work with and it’s important to me that I understand my clients experiences and work collaboratively with them to support their goals. My approach is strength-based, trauma-informed, and rooted within a multicultural/feminist framework that attends to context, reinforces resilience, and focuses on empowerment.

Sometimes you reach a point in your life where ongoing stress and/or the cumulative effects of trauma interfere with your relationships and disrupt your day to day functioning in the world.
My goal in therapy is to help you achieve a deeper understanding of why you may struggle to cope with stress and anxiety or make the desired behavioral changes you identify as needed in your life. I will work with you to explore your goals and motives, while learning about the neurobiological underpinnings of what we understand as our human "fight, flight of freeze" responses, which can often sabotage our ability to respond in ways that avoid exacerbating our situation and/or damaging our relationships with others. Together we will explore how you can learn to identify and short-circuit your emotional triggers.

Hi! I believe everyone is capable of healing, growth and positive change. I bring compassion, humor and authenticity to our counseling relationship. My work reflects my values and is strengths-focused, trauma-informed, anti-racist, and LGBTQIA-affirming. During our most difficult times, we develop coping strategies that serve us and keep us safe. I work with people to examine which strategies still benefit them and which they want to adjust or let go. People often enter therapy caught in shame or the belief they are somehow broken. We can work together to find skills that benefit you and build on strengths you already possess.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
