Whether you're questioning your sexual or gender identity or have been out for years, a therapist that understands you is key. We learn about ourselves through relationships and sometimes what we learned in the past isn’t helpful for us in the present. Trauma, abuse, neglect and microaggressions can teach us that we don’t deserve to have the career, relationships, sexual intimacy, or life that we want. This happens all too often with queer & trans people, especially BIPOC. Without conscious awareness, these lessons may cause us to sabotage ourselves or our relationships, but it’s never too late to start living your best life!

My name is William Dexter I am a LMFT licensed marriage family therapist. I am devoted to the health, well-being, and safety of clients and have lived a clean and sober lifestyle for over thirty years. My approach to therapy is to focus on relationships with yourself, with others, and with your Higher Power or GOD as you understand him. I believe the problem is not knowing who you are, and the solution is finding out who you are.

Behind every one of our problems lies the powerful desire for something better; a truth easily obscured when our troubles seem too much for us. My primary goal is to make therapy a safe, collaborative space in which choice and possibility reemerge in support of your preferred self.

Being human can be difficult. It comes with highs and lows, sometimes those highs and lows are frequently alternating, and sometimes they are not alternating enough. We all feel stuck at times, like things need to change, that things are out of control and moving too quickly, and we are exhausted from too much change, or maybe even someone dared to tell us we need to change. I am passionate about journeying with adolescents, adults, and families to discover helpful insights to live with a bit more ease, to stay more present, to increase your awareness about your humanness, or simply validate that being human can be difficult.

You want to experience stability and fulfillment in your intimate relationship that matches your steady and confident professional life. However, feeling safe enough to trust your partner or your own judgment has eluded you. It's confusing, difficult, and feels messy. You're in your late 20s to late 30s and aware of possible intergenerational patterns and trauma. You hope that with a right-fit therapist, you can work with your emotions embedded in cultural and contextual roots and take healthy steps that sometimes feel like "risks" but are aligned with the growth you want to see for yourself.

Taking a chance on yourself isn’t always easy and therapy can be a challenging space. I am here to walk with you on that journey. When you're on a plane they remind you its important to put your oxygen mask on first, because you cant take care of others before you take care of yourself. My hope is that therapy can be a space where you can truly take care of yourself, build confidence, become the truest version of yourself, and reach your goals on your terms.

Are you stuck in frustrating patterns that you don’t understand or know how to fix? Maybe you repeatedly skirt the truth to avoid conflict. You keep saying “yes,” when deep down you know you desperately want to say “no.” You resent yourself and others because you just can’t seem to set boundaries or ask for what you need. Your anger keeps getting the best of you and hurting the relationships you care about most. You’re frozen in anxiety and can’t seem to shift these patterns even though you know you need to.

I come from the heart. I'm here to help you feel safe and secure. I am here to go on a journey with you to find your true self, to lift depression, to work with anxiety, and transform this time of crisis into stronger relationships and more heart-felt productivity. As a gay, Jewish man, I have an ear for all people struggling with difference and oppression. I can go deep with you into healing old trauma. Or I can help you coach you with day-to-day career and relationship challenges. If you need a therapy to jump-start new growth in the New Year, I am here for you on that quest of both self-discovery and seeing more palpable results.

I value helping to foster a secure space and use an integrative approach to help clients feel empowered to reach their personal goals. Intersectionality has been paramount on my own personal healing journey and I have had the opportunity to work with clients who benefit from the same lens.

Whatever your needs may be, I am here to offer support. Therapy is a process of growth and self-discovery that can often feel daunting to begin and my goal is to make it as comfortable as possible. I have always enjoyed the art of deep listening. I understood from a young age that opportunities to connect with others in these meaningful ways are a true gift are some of life's luxuries. People often gravitate towards relationships that feel safe and I've had the pleasure of being that somebody in clinic, school, and hospital settings.

I specialize in working with black women who have checked many of the boxes in life but have found themselves in a challenging relationship. One day it’s all good and the next week it's all bad. You argue all the time and feel the relationship could be fixed if you just knew what to do and what to say. Anytime you want to communicate, it just ends with more fighting. Even though you’re constantly explaining yourself, you’re not being heard. You feel alone, isolated…like you can’t talk to anyone about what’s going on. And sharing your experience with family or friends means being judged and receiving unhelpful advice to "just leave."

Do you struggle with letting yourself truly rest? Humans aren’t machines, but a lot of us have been trained to hold ourselves to impossibly high standards of productivity. Is balance possible? Can we learn to adjust our pace to allow for rest and calm before burnout inevitably sets in?

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Los Angeles?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
