Whether online or in person, my sessions use a person and/or family centered approach that uses the mind's natural ability to heal.
Happy to offer online therapy and remote EMDR. My work is evidence-based, unique, and creative. It is grounded in behavioral change, mindfulness, and traditional talk therapy, which has been shown to effectively reduce trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, childhood behavioral disorders, and grief. Through the therapy process adults, families, and children can find a safe place to develop the skills they need to heal, to grow, and to thrive. My goal is to make each session unique to the needs of each person so they can build upon what already makes them happy.

I specialize in working with individuals who are committed to self-development. I specialize in using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an approach that focuses on an individuals' values, and changes their relationship with their thoughts and emotions. I also use techniques from positive psychology to help people flourish rather than engage in behaviors that provide only short-term gratification. Moreover, given that we learn how to deal with stressors from our families of origin, I help people live as who they truly are rather than who they have been conditioned to be.

We receive constant messages that if you are not feeling happy something is wrong. But is this fair? Over 50% of us will suffer with a mental health condition in our lifetime! This suggests suffering is not pathological, but rather a universal experience. The fact you are human guarantees you will experience pain. Sadly, sometimes our well-intended efforts to avoid pain can unintentionally lead to more suffering. Across time we can lose touch with what matters to us most and our quality of life goes down. We can become stuck in an unnecessary battle with ourselves, and all the while life continues to go by.

I am a licensed independent social worker (LISW) who has worked in a variety of settings such as inpatient, outpatient, youth shelters, adult shelters, and community based therapy settings. After experiencing Hurricane Katrina, I chose to focus my studies on how to help my clients process and move through their traumatic experiences. My passion is teaching clients the skills and tools they need to improve their lives while connecting them with a better understanding of who they are and where they want to go. Everyone is important and deserves a nonjudgmental, comforting space and the support to figure things out.

If you have ever asked yourself if you are living as well as you could then counseling may be for you. I find most people (including my clients) can get by just fine on their own. I am here to help them do more than "just get by." My goal is to help you live the life you want and enjoy it more fully. How to better manage anxiety, improve mood, improve coping skills, and better your interpersonal relationships are something I enjoy helping people with. Welcome, thank you for being here. I see (many) experiences of suffering as inevitable and how we respond and care for ourselves through them matters. My work is based on a philosophy of learning to suffer well, meaning that we engage with curiosity and kindness, as we develop new ways to soothe distress and communicate with honesty and respect. Together we can tend to the roots of your suffering and make room for joy. I work from a trauma and compassion lens and integrate other EBTs. I prioritize safety, trustworthiness and transparency, collaborating and empowering your voice and choice while respecting your culture and history.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
