It is my passion to share in the process of another's life journey, and I consider it a great honor to be present for the healing and growth that therapy can bring. I work with individuals and couples on myriad issues, ranging from anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, and relationship difficulties, to working toward personal growth, self-exploration, and healthy relationship development. I am particularly interested in helping women find their voices and personal power, and encouraging them to live more satisfying, empowered lives.

I believe that every person deserves the highest quality of care and that treatment decisions should be based on more than just opinion. I make an ongoing effort to keep up with the latest scientific research and offer only scientifically evaluated treatments, known as Evidence Based Practices (EBP). I place a high value on developing a warm, collaborative relationship between client and therapist and implementing EBPs in a way that honors the values and preferences of the client and family. I believe that well researched treatments provided by a skilled and engaging therapist will result in the most effective treatments.

Life events sometimes throw us curve balls when we least expect it. Do you now or often experience anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, divorce, or even post-pandemic returning to work concerns? These are stressors that give us feelings of uncertainty and hopelessness, impacting the ability to function in relationships, occupation, social life, and obtaining educational goals. Does it seem as though you’ve been knocked down once too many times and getting up is a struggle? When in the middle of a struggle words such as “tomorrow” and “feeling better” seem so far away.

If you’re tired of recycling the same argument, walking on eggshells with each other or don’t know how to repair your relationship, I can help you get to the root of your disconnection. I help distressed, disconnected couples remember what it's like to be sexy best friends instead of roommates. Together, we will identify your entrenched ways of arguing so that both of you can break these patterns by learning how to clearly state how you’re feeling to your partner and in turn, listen deeply. I'll help you pay close attention to each other, so that you both feel a little more held each time we meet.

I believe that therapy is a way to gain a deeper understanding into the thoughts, feelings, and experiences behind the narratives that inform how we show up for ourselves and our relationships with others. Sometimes these narratives keep us stuck in patterns that no longer serve us and create distress in our lives, that’s where my job as your therapist begins.

"You do not have to be good You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles repenting you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves..." -Mary Oliver. Oliver suggests that liberation is always-already present. How do we contact this natural brilliance? How do we walk that liminal space between will and surrender, acceptance and change? Being incarnated in a human body means facing ordeals but how much we suffer becomes a choice. We refine our ability to choose through deep engagement with various inner practices and orientations.

Do you feel like nobody really sees you? Are you afraid that if they do, they’ll turn away? Sometimes we find ourselves putting on a “perfect” face because inside, we feel anything but. We lash out at the people close to us and then we feel confused and guilty. Maybe you’ve begun to notice some relationship patterns that no longer serve you. Maybe anxiety is holding you back from living a full life. Or maybe unprocessed trauma or grief are showing up in distressing ways. Therapy can help you get unstuck and move from feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and not-enough to balanced, engaged, and whole. I’ve got you.

Often people come to therapy because they feel lost or stuck in their lives. They may sense that they are repeating patterns or facing the same struggles at work, in their homes, or in relationships without really knowing why or being able to imagine how things could be different.

Attachment and trauma are my specialties. I work with clients that are struggling in their relationships (family, friends, romantic, etc.) and/or struggling with past or recent truama. I aim at helping client's explore their life's journey and see how the past is currently influencing the present. When growing up, we all needed to feel seen, soothed, safe, and secure by are caregivers, but many of our caregivers/parents, being human, fell short of their capacity to do so. I work with clients to help them see how their own family dynamics while growing up has influenced what they experience in the present day.

I feel very fortunate that in clinical psychology I have found a field where I have been glad to go to work since I saw my first client in 1974. My training has been "˜eclectic'. My undergrad work was in philosophy of science at University of Michigan. After a short stint in medical school, I went to San Diego State University, where my professors were Rogerians, cognitivists and behaviorists (that was before the latter two got hyphenated and finally acronym-ized into CBT), plus one crypto-Freudian who spoke little but offered the most amazing insights. I also had some years of personal psychoanalysis.

I often work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, relationships and childhood trauma. I believe that change that occurs in therapy comes from forming a safe therapeutic relationship, while increasing your awareness of self, challenging your old beliefs, and establishing appropriate boundaries in relationships with others. I tend to be an active participant in therapy. I ask questions, offer observations, and look for patterns that may help provide a deeper understanding. However, I believe the client is the true expert on themselves, and I trust in each individuals unique healing process.

"Compassionate towards yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world." These words of wisdom hold truth for me. I believe all of life is about relationships--to ideas and circumstances, as well as people--and I think that one of the most important relationships is the one we have with our self. Change is possible when we see things as they are. I work in collaboration with people as they work toward their goals. I see individuals, couples and families (especially teens and parents) who recognize the need for change in their lives.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Tacoma?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
