Have you felt as though your emotions are spiraling out of control, or that you are walking on eggshells trying to avoid negative interactions with those around you? You may be struggling to cope with the effects of trauma or feelings of worry, hopelessness, or detachment. Perhaps you have a loved one who is experiencing chronic physical or mental health conditions which influence your emotional well being. It is not uncommon to feel stuck or overwhelmed. You may even feel as if your very identity is defined by the problems you are facing. You just want to get control of your life back, and build a new, healthy you.

My clients want an empathic, understanding therapist who helps them develop insight and skills to overcome their challenges and break free of the issues that are holding them back from achieving their life goals. Most of my clients cannot afford the customary rates for therapy and want a therapist who is nonjudgmental and sensitive to their circumstances. Although many of my clients want short-term treatment to cope with anxiety and depression, many others want a therapist who can help them with complex problems that require long-term treatment.

I specialize in treating trauma and chronic stress, in particular developmental trauma. I work holistically and incorporate the body-mind perspective in my work. I have completed the three-year (216 hour) training to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP), which is a short-term naturalistic approach to healing trauma. I have also completed the two-year (144 hour) training in the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM), which is a treatment approach that addresses developmental trauma, i.e. childhood trauma. I am currently studying Psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Association of California (PINC).

At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor.
Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that).

As a military veteran, I am comfortable with other veterans.
Hello, If you are looking for in-person (video sessions available) sessions and would like to talk to someone today, please call or send me an email. Typically, I am able to return your call or email within a day. I hear from patients all the time, that the hardest part to finding and connecting with a clinician is getting someone to take your call or call you back. I try to make connecting one of easier parts of therapy. I provide counseling services to individuals, couples, and families, and adopt an approach that is engaged and collaborative. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am a veteran and proudly support military families.
Becoming more mindful of how our thoughts affect our emotions allows us to truly see the connection our behaviors have in our day to day lives. I am a strengths-based and client centered therapist practicing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have also had training through UC Davis to incorporate Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques in session. I treat mood disorders such as Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar disorder. I help support those who have experienced trauma and PTSD. Serious mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective, and Bipolar disorders are also a passion of mine.

After my time in the military, I began my second career as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
A solid therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in therapy. I am glad that you are seeking more information to see if we might be a good fit to work together in meeting your goals. I will keep it brief as some clients prefer to know very little about me. Others seek more information...so if there are any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.I was born into a large midwestern family. After high school, I headed to the east coast where I attended the United States Naval Academy.

I identify as Mexican-American, gay, and ex-military.
To me, a large part of therapy is about grieving, acceptance, and peace within ourselves and others; I am particularly good at helping people get in touch with their feelings. I tend to work with the heavier side of therapy, that include drug/ alcohol /cannabis addiction, domestic violence, narcissism, borderline, sex/porn addiction, sex offense, sexual shame, couples working through sobriety-recovery dynamics, infidelity, poly relationships, court, and anger management. I tend to work really well with those who enjoy dark humor, who are avoidant by nature, and those who are seeking redemption from guilt/shame.

I am a "military brat" with family in both the military and law enforcement my whole life.
I serve First Responders and Military personnel (active, retired) struggling with stress, personal relationships, family challenges, and professional growth concerns. My clients sometimes have past events that also need to be addressed so that they can successfully focus on their present needs without being distracted by stressful memories and ineffective coping methods. My clients' goals in therapy are to minimize their stressors in the most efficient, yet comfortable manner possible with the utmost confidentiality.

Prior to seeing clients in a private practice setting, I provided therapy for over 1,000 combat Veterans, military sexual trauma Veterans and their family members for the Department of Veteran's Affairs.
One of the most important lessons I have learned as a therapist is that therapy requires more than a one size fits all approach. I treat every person as an individual. I lean on my years of experience and use a multitude of treatment modalities to treat your individual needs. We can work together to help you achieve your therapeutic goals. I have treated individuals with a variety of issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, dissociative identity disorder, substance abuse disorders, anger, and more. I have also helped families and couples achieve harmony and improve their relationships and communication.

I specialize in working with clients with complex trauma and dissociative disorders, particularly those with multiple marginalized identities (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, chronic pain/disability) involved in harmful systems (foster care, carceral system, military, and hospitalizations). My approach to the work is that our systems and our world are fundamentally inequitable, and therapy is a way to help us survive in the face of many sources of adversity. With therapy, we learn about ourselves and our patterns and develop compassion for our suffering and ways to care for ourselves in all areas of our lives.

My approaches are varied, and I specialize in working with those seeking healing from trauma, loss, or addiction, with a proud focus on serving the military, first responder, and law enforcement communities.
Life is in constant flux. Whether you or a loved one are struggling with trauma, depression, anxiety, life adjustment issues, grief, unhealthy habits, or have a need to explore the deeper parts of yourself, selecting a counselor that fits you best is most important. Reaching out to an unknown professional you do not know can feel uncomfortable and overwhelming, especially when you or someone you love is hurting, but it is helpful to remember that counselors are human beings first just like you. Everyone, regardless of their challenges, can benefit from therapy.

I am an Air Force veteran with a passionate in helping others. I was born in the Philippines but raised in Maryland. After graduating from high school, I made the decision to serve in the United States Air Force as an Equal Opportunity Advisor. During my time in the military, I came face-to-face with trauma and learned about the complexity of the human brain. It became evident to me that having a trusted person by your side can alleviate emotional intensity.

Veterans Therapists

Why is mental health important for veterans and the military?

Veterans are more likely to face mental health challenges than the general public, and such mental health challenges can make it difficult for them to navigate day-to-day life. Improved mental health can result in better interpersonal relationships, lower levels of stress, and decreased dependence on substances, such as drugs or alcohol, for many veterans. Addressing common mental health conditions can also help facilitate recovery from physical health challenges that are faced by many veterans, such as chronic pain, physical injury, or poor sleeping patterns. Therapists trained in working with veterans can help address these concerns and help improve veteran mental health.

How can veterans get access to mental health support?

There are many resources for veterans to get mental health support, including through the VA or through their primary care doctor. Many service personnel are eligible for free or reduced-cost mental health counseling through the VA, depending on their service history and current income. Veterans can also utilize online directories, such as Psychology Today, or nonprofit organization resources like the Wounded Warrior Project, to find a therapist or other healthcare professional that specializes in their specific mental health needs. Veterans may also benefit from community-based groups that facilitate social connection and/or address specific concerns, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

What type of therapy is best for veterans?

Veterans may benefit from multiple types of therapy, depending on what mental health challenges they are facing. Veterans seeking therapy for anxiety or depression may benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which encourage clients to understand how their thought patterns influence their behavior. Veterans with PTSD may seek other more specialized forms of therapy to treat trauma symptoms, such as EMDR or exposure therapy. Many veterans and military personnel may also benefit from family or couples counseling to address the stress and adjustment challenges that can be associated with military life.

Can therapy for veterans help with trauma and PTSD?

Therapy can be highly effective in helping veterans with trauma and PTSD. Therapists specializing in veteran mental health often have extensive training and experience helping veterans navigate symptoms of trauma and can teach clients coping techniques to handle common symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. Some therapists may use talk therapy as their primary approach, while others utilize more structured therapy modalities in sessions, such as EMDR. Veterans can try multiple therapy modalities to find the best fit for them. Therapists can also help make referrals or connect clients with available resources, such as VA benefits, to help address other life concerns.
