Are you tired of getting caught in the same old patterns you’ve been trying so hard to break? Are you starting to recognize that your childhood wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, but aren’t sure where to go from here? Are you trying to raise your children differently than the way you were parented and noticing that this is a LOT easier said than done? I offer attachment-focussed and trauma-informed counselling to folks of all genders and orientations. I work with clients recovering from acute or complex trauma, including childhood abuse and neglect, and specialize in working with fellow members of the queer community.

I have worked for several years in the field of mental health. I believe that mental health is a continuum for all of us. With my skills as an occupational therapist and certified diplomate with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, my goals are to help young people and adults develop strategies for living, find healthy coping mechanisms and understand how to change their behavior through changing the way they think. I believe we are all "becoming", and look forward to helping you become your best self.

I have over 20 years experience working with individuals, couples and families. I am a trauma informed therapist, trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I offer a supportive and welcoming environment to assist with the development of self-awareness, the understanding of behaviours and patterns, the appropriate expression of thoughts and feelings and the exploration of healthy and effective coping skills. In my approach to counselling I use a variety of therapeutic modalities including, but not limited to, narrative and mindfulness-based therapy.

The really good things in life are not supposed to be this complicated. You've been feeling off, you’re distracted and disengaged from the important people in your life, and you’re struggling with deeply personal issues that you just can't shake off. These are things you’re not even sure how to talk to people about. You’re embarrassed and ashamed to have the problems you have and you’re not sure why you can’t just manage things on your own, but you can’t seem to. You know it’s time to bring in a hired gun. You want results, you want relief, and you want it yesterday. You don’t want to be in therapy for years, either.

I've had the pleasure of seeing the positive impacts that therapy can have in the toughest of times. While the journey may not always be easy, I will always believe in your ability to do hard things. Witnessing people navigating through their most challenging moments and emerge empowered, having undergone personal growth, reaffirms my belief in the transformative power of therapy, and you. Currently accepting new clients (youth and young adults), both in-person and virtual.

Are you a teen or young adult struggling to cope with constant worrying or depression? Are you experiencing stress and difficulties at school, work, or in relationships? Do you find you’re frequently doubting your abilities, beating yourself up about mistakes, or ruminating over flaws and imperfections? Or perhaps you’re a parent who has noticed signs of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in your child.

We all experience fear, angst and distress. A cure for mental illness isn't in my reach. I can help you develop behavioural strategies to become comfortable feeling these emotions. And remember, the journey itself is the reason we grow. My professional and personal goal is to guide you to see the courage that you already possess.

Psychotherapy literally means "Healing the Soul." Our personalities and the world around us are multifaceted and often mysterious. Exploring the mystery of who we are can bring clarity and meaning to our lives, our relationship with the world, and open new perspectives and possibilities in how we live. I have worked and studied in many areas including social work, philosophy, music, martial arts and shamanic practices. I use a wide range of modalities depending on the needs, uniqueness and preferences of each person. My therapy training includes Existential-Integrative psychotherapy which emphasizes the search for authenticity, meaning and wholeness in our lives.

My name is Matthew (Matt) and I come with over 15 years of experience in the mental health and addictions field. I prefer an eclectic and integrative psychotherapeutic approach to meet individualized needs. Counselling involves talk therapy; however, I also engage in "do" therapy. This means that I want to help you find or rediscover your "wise self" to build your capacity to manage mental wellness, so it is not managing you.

The pain of grief & loss can feel all-consuming, leaving you adrift & unable to move forward. You might find yourself struggling to get through each day, feeling isolated from those around you, & weighed down by a heaviness that just won't lift. Nobody else can really understand how this feels. If you talk about these feelings to others, you feel like you’re going to leave them depressed & burdened by you. But you also really feel a need to talk about what you’re going through. It's exhausting trying to navigate this alone, & you might be questioning why you can't simply get past it. You know you need help, & you need it now.

You: "I am READY to feel better." Me: "Right on. I've got the tools. Let's get to work." This whole therapy business may seem a little weird to you, but you have been feeling a deep lack of connection to the things that really matter to you and you don't want to keep feeling this way. You've had some struggles earlier in your life, or more recently, that have impacted how you relate to others and how you related to the world in general, and you're not liking how this restriction, this disconnect feels. You've wanted to be a better coworker, partner, or father, and you're feeling really ready to invest the time to make it happen.

Feeling disoriented, deflated and just tired can make it hard to experience joy. How can I walk alongside of you? Are you ready to regain balance? To break cyclical behaviours and thoughts? Or to grow in deeper intimacy in your relationships.

Right now things just don't feel right. You're trying your best to cope, but it just isn't working. You're tired, not motivated, feeling down and blue, and you don't know how to fix it. Or, you're noticing that you're feeling uncomfortable in your body, worried, and stressed out, but attempts to solve your problem just haven't cut it (and maybe your coping attempts are making things a bit worse!). You might be noticing eating, sleeping, or additional problems, and you're tempted to back away from your regular life patterns to manage.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in K7M?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
