I am welcoming new adult psychotherapy clients. Examples of the types of experiences that people have that may lead them to see me for support and assistance include the experience of acute or chronic stress, anxiety, worry, or emotional pain; depression; self-criticism & the desire to work on lessening its negative presence/impacts; challenging or painful life experiences; life transitions and changes; the desire to become more self-aware and more self-compassionate. I aim to help people improve and maintain their sense of well-being and to navigate challenges they are experiencing in ways that feel helpful and honouring for them.

I have worked with clients for over 30 years, and recently retired from the role of Clinical Director at a counselling agency to focus on a small private practice. I work in a relaxed atmosphere, out of my home, in the woods, which suits my counselling style well. Over the years I have worked with people with varying needs, including people who have experienced trauma, including childhood trauma, workplace trauma and war trauma. I work with individuals, couples, families and groups. I specialize in working with people who are willing to go beyond the surface to explore their own spiritual and personal growth.

Your struggles with anxiety, depression, lack of confidence or sense of self-worth can stem from childhood trauma. Do you frequently ask yourself "what is wrong with me?" or "why can't I just..." or speak unkindly to yourself? I want to tell you that there isn't anything wrong with you and there are lots of possible reasons why "you can't just feel better about yourself, or get that project done". What you learned as a child plays a big role in the adult you have become. Honestly, how could it not? But this isn't about blaming your parents, it is about learning skills your parents may not have learned themselves.

Seeking support and engaging in therapy takes courage. I strive to work with clients in a way that builds trust and safety, honours their unique story, invites curiosity, and fosters insight into what is getting in the way and contributing to distress in their day to day lives. Through compassionate, respectful, inclusive interactions, and evidence-base practice, I work collaboratively with clients as they move towards creating meaningful change in their lives. No issue is too big or too small. What matters is a willingness to show up and take the courageous step towards healing and growth.

Sometimes people feel stuck or disconnected from themselves, their bodies, their relationships, and the world around them. This can show itself through feeling numb, detached, anxious, depressed, emotionally dysregulated, low feelings of self-worth, ongoing negative thought patterns, and struggling to form healthy relationships with yourself and others. I work with people to help find ways to rebuild these connections and to help them create a life worth living. Together, we can work on exploring reoccurring life themes, co-creating solutions, and rewriting new stories about your life.

What is meaningful to you? What can be different in your life to bring you closer to that meaning? The impact of invalidation, abuse and neglect can deplete our personal sense of well-being and our ability to connect with others. To better find your solutions I will investigate the problems with you. To do so, I combine my experience as a trauma therapist with approaches such as narrative therapy, behavioural therapy, and somatic work using Brainspotting. In addition, if you have an established relationship with a therapist, I provide short term adjective support using Brainspotting and Safe and Sound Protocol.

I specialize working intensively with couples discouraged by constant arguing, feelings of betrayal, or a lack of intimacy, both emotional and physical. My work is focused on helping clients develop safe, and secure-functioning relationships by knowing who they are, where they have come from, and how their early attachment histories impact their adult life. The more they understand each other, the easier they can repair moments of disconnect. My goal is to help each couple feel safe and secure no matter the issue, and to develop a clear framework so they will know how to move forward as a team. I am a Level 11 PACT therapist.

I believe that the road to finding happiness and freedom begins with a simple principle, understanding that some things are within our control and some things are not. Whether you are controlled by anxiety, dreading the “what ifs” of the future. Or you are stuck in the past and find it difficult to move on, I believe I can help. I am dedicated to building a therapeutic alliance with my clients and working on an individual basis to help each, and every person realize their strengths to find their own solutions. I work with clients 18 and over to support them in recovering from anxiety, depression, addictions and relationship issues.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
