My style is gentle and down-to-earth and I approach therapy from a client-centred, trauma-informed, narrative perspective.
You're looking for much more than a therapist - you're here because you desire something to change in your life or relationships. I empower people and their relationships to overcome obstacles, connect, rediscover and reclaim their best and authentic lives. I work to create a safe and confidential space for all - to freely explore, acknowledge, resist external pressures and move towards what's right for you. I don’t “diagnose,” fix “disorders,” or pathologize “patients” - I collaborate with people in practical ways that consider their experiences, their needs, their style, their goals - at their pace.

I draw heavily from narrative therapy.
Whether you need support through a significant life event, you're having unkind thoughts about yourself or others and want to work through them, or you are just generally feeling unwell and want to regain balance – therapy allows someone to walk with you on that journey. You may have days where you feel low, nervous, unmotivated, or lost. Those can get in the way of your enjoyment, your relationships, or you just being at your best. I work with individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds, placing intentional focus on folks who identify within the IBPOC, queer, gay/lesbian, trans, and other underserved communities.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and my practice is informed by a variety of evidence-based approaches, including Mindfulness-Based therapies, ACT, and Narrative Therapy which aim to help individuals separate themselves from challenges they encounter and create new ways of living that reflect a more accurate and compassionate view of themselves.
Living through traumatic experiences can leave us feeling lost, unsafe, or out of control of our own lives. Especially if the trauma experienced was at the hands of someone you knew or trusted. Whether it is childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or sexual abuse or assault; interpersonal trauma can rupture our ability to trust ourselves and others.

I believe that everyone has a story and I love to encourage the individuals I work with to learn how to be in control of their own narrative.
I have experience working with women of all ages in a variety of situations. I have a heart for helping woman that have experienced trauma and are struggling to relearn who they are. As a single mom with complex chronic health struggles I am also able to relate, encourage and empathize with others who have experienced or are experiencing similar situations.

I have training in Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Feminist Approaches, and Trauma-Informed practice.
I invite and include all humans; even if you feel alien, you are welcome. As a member of the LGBTQ2S community with mixed ancestry and a decolonizing lens, I see people as being impacted by their social, cultural and environmental circumstances. These factors intersect with the Self which includes spiritual, physical, mental and emotional aspects. Your unique expression of Self requires an approach tailored to your specific needs and style of learning. We will collaborate on the approach and your goals to ensure that you get what you need from therapy. We will also build in checkpoints to allow for course correction.

I use an integrative approach, drawing on different interventions depending on your needs, including: EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Narrative Therapy.
We all experience challenges at different times in our lives. Therapy can help us see our path more clearly and navigate our way through difficult and challenging times. We can get stuck in old patterns and ways of responding to life's challenges. Often we're not aware of where these responses may be coming from. When we get curious about what were experiencing, it can lead to new insights and an opportunity to create conditions to move toward a positive future. I have experience working with individuals who are experiencing a wide range of challenges including life transitions, stress, grief, depression, and anxiety.

As I work in a client-centred way I will also pull tools from Narrative Therapy, Feminist Therapy, Polyvagal Theory & Trauma Therapy.
I view the counselling space as an opportunity to re-remember what you already know. I come into the space with the belief that we are all born with everything we need. It is through trauma, adversity, oppression, systems of power and various other life-experiences that close the doors to our inner world of knowing. Just as our bodies are able to heal from physical wounds, I believe we are also capable of healing our emotional wounds when we are able to access the innate Self. Accessing Self energy can heal our more vulnerable & wounded parts. Holding space for you to turn your greatest wounds into your greatest gifts.

My practice is influenced by narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, neuroscience, and body-based approaches.
Hi, I'm Shay and I'm so glad you're here. It is incredibly brave and vulnerable to reach out for support. If you've experienced sexual violence, are questioning your gender or sexuality, enduring racism, or feeling overwhelmed by trauma symptoms - know that you aren't alone and that together we can find a way forward! You can expect me to show up with curiosity, compassion, kindness, presence, flexibility, and a deep love for this work. I believe healing happens through authentic relationship, so I bring my full self into counselling. My hope is for you to show up exactly as you are, and know that you are seen, heard, and accepted.

Through a Jungian, Narrative and Somatic lens, I work with clients braving a wide range of personal and systemic challenges.
When our experiences become too overwhelming, confusing or distressing to navigate alone, therapy can be one of the most powerful containers offered to us. Together, we uncover patterns that no longer serve you, identifying the narratives that are healing or unhelpful, and learn to balance the tension of opposites. To be human is to suffer. We can learn to be in relationship with our pain by learning to be with our bodies. When we listen from within, we can step into our fullest selves with dignity, grace and consciousness. It's my privilege to walk your unique path of purpose and acceptance.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
