I use a person-centered framework while drawing from acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic, existentialist and attachment-based approaches.
Hey! I'm Christopher, a Registered Provisional Psychologist. I work with teens, adults, couples and families dealing with a variety of concerns. I value flexibility, accountability and fun. I strive to meet you wherever you are in life's journey, whether you wish to dive deep and wade through the darkness or if you just want a tune up and need some immediate relief. I aim to hold you accountable to your goals, hopes, and dreams in our work together. Lastly, I believe the journey is about progress (no matter how small) over perfection, which can be made a lot smoother when we are able to exhale and share a few laughs along the way.

I use a holistic and attachment-based approach to help individuals, partners, and families identify and shift out of negative patterns and beliefs so they can start to build stronger relationships with themselves and one another.
You struggle to feel like you're good enough. No matter how hard you try it feels like you don't measure up and you're always falling short. It's hard to find a space where you can truly belong and be yourself. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed by your life and relationships. Other times you feel completely hopeless. You are ready to let go of the belief that you were never good enough and begin to feel comfortable being yourself. Therapy can be a space where you can show up just as you are and learn to love yourself. It's your time to take off the masks, let go of the pressure, and begin to connect with your true self.

There are times when we feel like we are looking for something. Something is missing in ourselves; in our lives. We feel alone in our problems. We feel like we're not enough. We want to show who we really are but we're afraid. Finding a way through starts with being curious about ourselves; about others; about life. We can feel fully present in our lives when we tune in to our own attachment needs and those of the people we love. Two Psychologists, Brea Malacad and Paul Berg, have created this new private practice in Edmonton emphasizing this need for connection and attachment.

Are you struggling with emotional distress from childhood trauma, stressful relationships with parents, unhealthy past relationships ? Would you describe yourself as a "people pleaser"? Do you experience anxiety, difficulties setting boundaries and problems forming healthy relationships? Do you find yourselves in relationship patterns that are not "good" for you? Are you seeking to heal and learn skills to nurture healthy connections with yourself and others?

I am committed to providing safe space within which clients can feel free to be honest about themselves, their struggles, and their questions. I believe clients deserve to understood holistically as physical, psychological, social, and spiritual beings and to be supported as they navigate the messy interplay between these dimensions of their lives. I find joy in helping clients see themselves and their circumstances in a new light, learn to recognize and trust the strength already resident within themselves, find new ways of relating to the past, present, and future, and gain a greater sense of freedom and fulfillment in daily life.

Good psychologists devote ample time to listening to and helping their clients. No one should have to feel like they are making an elevator pitch when they see their therapist. I offer longer sessions which allow for deeper discussions and help that is personalized to your lived experience, strengths, and culture. My approach is calming, caring, insightful, and creative, and I'm also trained to discuss topics that some psychologists don't have the comfort or cultural knowledge to address. Together, let's start building a way forward free from struggle with negative emotions and towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life!

My goal is to help every client thrive emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually. I am equally as interested to hear a client’s story of trauma, loss, regret, loneliness, and difficult family dynamics, as I am to listen about times filled with purpose, hope, and happiness. I pay close attention to what is said, in addition to what is left unsaid, to uncover patterns of core beliefs.

I am keen to work with individuals interested in personal development, and dealing head-on with obstacles to that development. There is likely some awareness of what those obstacles might be, because the individual is encountering difficulties in relationships to self and/or others, in role functioning, or in comfort and enjoyment with life. Insight and self-understanding are sought, and there is an interest in clarifying how past history might be implicated in current issues. There may also be a degree of frustration in terms of recognizing emotions or appreciating opposing poles of specific conflicts. Motivation to work is key.

In my practice I see a wide range of clients: adults, teens, children, adults who have experienced developmental traumas [sexual, physical & emotional abuse] (often in the context of their own dysfunctional family of origin), clients with PTSD, couples who are seeking to strengthen their relationship, families looking for new ways to resolve old problems, and individuals who keep repeating the past. Depending on the presenting problem and a client's history, I often integrate EMDR Therapy and Gestalt Therapy and/or Structural Family Therapy. Online counselling is now available to residents of Alberta.

I specialize in helping people who experience depression, anxiety, low self-confidence, and painful feelings in current or past significant relationships. My work involves assisting people to make sense of their emotional reactions and supporting them to use this information to make wise decisions for their life. At other times, I help people alleviate their painful emotions by using techniques that change unhelpful emotion states to more invigorating emotion states. I believe in practicing as a culturally competent therapist, striving to be knowledgeable, open and respectful of the cultural beliefs and practices of all people.

Connection is a deep bond in which you develop awareness between yourself and the external world. Through this awareness, your identity as well as the ability to comprehend and communicate with others evolves. As you continue to develop and make more meaningful connections, the more grounded you may feel, in who you are and how you interact with the world. However, there are many of you that have experienced unhealthy or toxic connections with yourself or others. As a result, you may feel like disconnecting and withdrawing is the safest decision to make.

Supporting others begins with the presence of a safe space of openness and acceptance that facilitates a client’s innate yearning for healing, growth, and self actualization. My own journey has led me to the joy, mystery, and wonder of self discovery, the healing experience of healthy relationships, and finding meaning and purpose in life. The enjoyment in my work as a therapist comes from guiding clients on their journey to discover what brings them joy and to help them reconnect to their inner resources – their strengths, wholeness, peace, deeper nature, and internal guidance and wisdom.

I do not restrict myself to one specific type of client. As a Psychologist, want to help them cope with the diagnosis and work with them throughout their treatment.

Sometimes our thoughts and feelings become unmanageable without help. Anxiety, stress and depression are just some of the ways our mind tells us that something isn't right, or the ways we've coped in the past aren't quite working as well as they did. Change can be unsettling and distressing, but it can also be healing, fulfilling and hopeful. I provide a therapeutic space that is safe, warm and engaging where you can engage in your process, at whatever pace you need.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
